US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that his administration is negotiating a new trade deal with India. His comments come amid ongoing discussions between the two nations following steep American tariffs on Indian exports.
Trump Expresses Admiration for Modi
While speaking in South Korea ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, Trump said, “I’m doing a trade deal with India, and I have great respect and love for Prime Minister Modi. We have a great relationship.”
His remarks highlight Washington’s intention to rebuild economic ties with New Delhi, even as both sides navigate trade challenges and geopolitical differences.
Tariffs and Trade Tensions
In August, the Trump administration imposed duties of up to 50% on Indian imports. The decision came as a penalty for India’s continued oil trade with Russia, which the US has criticized amid its sanctions on Moscow.
India Defends Its Energy Policy
India has repeatedly stated that its energy decisions are based on national interest. New Delhi argues that its oil imports from Russia are guided by market conditions and security needs. Officials have emphasized that ensuring affordable energy for India’s population remains a top priority, not a matter of political alignment.
