Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian troops have made major advances in the strategic city of Pokrovsk, which Moscow has been trying to capture for more than two years.
He explained that although Russia “has not been able to achieve its planned results yet,” the situation remains serious because Russian troops outnumber Ukrainian soldiers by eight to one. Zelenskyy admitted that Ukraine cannot match this level of manpower.
Pokrovsk’s Strategic Importance
Pokrovsk is a vital transport and supply hub that helps Ukraine deliver reinforcements and equipment to the eastern front. If Russia captures this city, it will move closer to full control of the Donetsk region, one of its main targets in eastern Ukraine.
‘Difficult Situation’ on the Ground
Zelenskyy described the fighting in Pokrovsk as “difficult” and said that “sabotage groups” have entered the area, leading to fierce battles across the town.
According to him, satellite images show that over 200 Russian soldiers are already inside Pokrovsk. If Moscow manages to seize the city, nearby fortified towns such as Kramatorsk, Slovyansk, Kostyantynivka, and Druzhkivka could face direct attacks.
Ukrainian Forces Under Pressure
Captain Hryhoriy Shapoval said Russian forces have built up large numbers of troops and equipment near Pokrovsk. They are using armored vehicles to shield their advancing infantry.
“So it’s hard to stop them,” he admitted, reflecting the challenges faced by Ukrainian defenders.
Zelenskyy Urges Trump to Act
During a press conference in Kyiv, Zelenskyy also called on US President Donald Trump to urge Chinese leader Xi Jinping to stop supporting Russia when they meet later this week.
Trump confirmed he would raise the issue of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine during his meeting with Xi on Thursday in South Korea.
“If President Trump manages to hold talks, make decisions, and reach an understanding with China to reduce imports of Russian energy, I think it will help all of us,” Zelenskyy said.
Trump’s Diplomatic Challenge
Trump has tried to use his personal connection with Russian President Vladimir Putin to bring an end to the war in Ukraine. However, his efforts have not yet led to any meaningful progress.
