West Indies defeated Bangladesh by 14 runs in the second T20I of the three-match series at Chattogram, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead. The visitors posted 149/9 in 20 overs. Shai Hope and Alick Athanaze scored quick half-centuries and shared a 105-run partnership for the second wicket. At one stage, West Indies were cruising at 106/1, but brilliant spells from Mustafizur Rahman (3/21 in 4 overs), Rishad Hossain (2/20 in 3 overs), and Nasum Ahmed (2/35 in 4 overs) triggered a collapse, restricting them to 149/9 in 20 overs.
Despite the batting collapse, West Indies fought back strongly with the ball. Romario Shepherd (3/29 in 4 overs), Akeal Hosein (3/22 in 4 overs), and Jason Holder (2/20 in 4 overs) led the attack, ensuring Bangladesh fell short of the 150-run target on a good batting surface. Tanzid Hasan fought hard, but his efforts were not enough as Bangladesh lost by 14 runs. This victory ended West Indies’ long wait for a T20I series win after seven consecutive defeats.
Hope and Athanaze Give West Indies a Bright Start
The West Indies innings began positively after winning some early luck. Litton Das dropped Brandon King off the first ball, and Towhid Hridoy missed a difficult chance to dismiss Alick Athanaze in the third over.
Athanaze took advantage, lofting Tanzim Hasan over square leg, while Shai Hope hit Taskin Ahmed for a clean six down the ground. Both batters looked confident, striking boundaries freely during the powerplay.
Athanaze smashed five fours, while Hope hit three. They reached their fifties from 30 balls each and added a 100-run stand in 10.5 overs. At that stage, West Indies looked set to post a total well beyond 200.
Bangladesh Bowlers Spark Middle-Order Collapse
The game changed in the 12th over when Athanaze mistimed a pull shot and was caught at deep square leg, giving Nasum Ahmed his first breakthrough. One ball later, Sherfane Rutherford fell for his second golden duck in a row.
Mustafizur then removed Hope for 55 after the West Indies captain mistimed a slower delivery. Soon after, Rishad Hossain dismissed Rovman Powell and Jason Holder in quick succession, both caught attempting big shots.
Romario Shepherd tried to rebuild the innings but failed to last long. Mustafizur struck again in the final over, removing Shepherd and Khary Pierre in consecutive deliveries. Hosein was run out on the last ball as West Indies were bowled out for 149 — a huge turnaround for the home side.
West Indies Bowlers Defend Modest Total
Bangladesh made a slow start in reply. Jason Holder removed Saif Hassan early with a short delivery that lured him into a loose shot. Brandon King took a sharp catch to make up for an earlier drop.
Litton Das tried to shift momentum by striking three boundaries off Jayden Seales in one over, using pace to his advantage. However, he soon lost his wicket to Hosein, bowled for 23.
Tanzid Hasan took charge after Litton’s dismissal. He hit three towering sixes over midwicket and looked set for a big score. But West Indies’ fielders gave Bangladesh chances to recover, dropping multiple catches, including one off Towhid Hridoy.
Tanzid Fights Alone as Bangladesh Falter
Bangladesh struggled throughout their chase. Tanzid Hasan played a determined innings of 61 runs, but he received little support from his teammates. The rest of the batters failed to build momentum and often hesitated between attack and defense, even with dew making conditions easier for batting.
The Bangladesh bowlers, however, had earlier kept their team in the game. Mustafizur Rahman starred with three wickets, while Nasum Ahmed and Rishad Hossain claimed two each, sparking a West Indies collapse in the middle overs.
Shepherd and Hosein Finish the Job
Seales eventually caught Hridoy in the 13th over off Shepherd’s bowling, helping West Indies regain control. Tanzid completed his fifty with a boundary but couldn’t keep the chase alive.
Needing 50 off the last five overs, Bangladesh’s chase slipped further. Tanzid fell for 61 off 48 balls, caught at deep point while trying to accelerate. In the same over, Shepherd also dismissed Jaker Ali for 17.
Holder bowled a brilliant 19th over, giving away just five runs and clean-bowling Shamim Hossain with a yorker. With 21 required off the final over, Akeal Hosein kept things tight, conceding no boundaries and taking two wickets to finish with 3 for 22.
Brief Scorecard
The disciplined performance from West Indies’ bowlers sealed a memorable victory despite their batting struggles. The win gave them a 2-0 series lead — their first T20I series triumph since 2022 — proving their growing consistency in limited-overs cricket. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
