Ronaldo Sees First Red Card for Portugal, World Cup Ban Likely
Cristiano Ronaldo received his first-ever red card for Portugal in Dublin, triggering a possible World Cup ban after a night of boos, frustration and a costly elbow incident.

Cristiano Ronaldo suffered a historic setback on Thursday at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. He received his first red card for Portugal. The 40-year-old reacted to constant boos and mocking gestures from Irish fans. His frustration grew as the match progressed.

Ronaldo’s red card came in his 226th international match, which is a world record in men’s football. This incident now puts him at risk of missing the opening match of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

A day before the match, Ronaldo expected a hostile crowd. He said, “The stadium will boo me, I’m used to it, I certainly hope they do – maybe it will take the pressure off other players.”

Ronaldo Loses Control After Fans Taunt Him

Ireland led 2-0 and fans kept mocking Ronaldo. He finally snapped in the 61st minute. He hit defender Dara O’Shea with his elbow away from the ball.

The referee first showed a yellow card. Then VAR called for a review. After watching the replay, the referee changed it to a red card.

Ronaldo walked off in disbelief. Irish fans waved at him and repeated the crying gestures. Ronaldo clapped sarcastically and exchanged words with Ireland coach Heimir Hallgrimsson.

Portugal lost 2-0. A win would have taken them to the 2026 World Cup. Two goals from Troy Parrott denied them that chance. Portugal still leads Group F by two points. A win against Armenia will secure their qualification. But Ronaldo may miss the first World Cup match, which is a major concern.

World Cup Ban Now Likely for Ronaldo

FIFA rules guarantee at least a one-match ban for any red card. The suspension may increase.
– Two matches for “serious foul play.”
– Three matches for “assault, including elbowing.”

Ronaldo must serve these bans only in official matches. Friendlies do not count.

Tension between Ronaldo and Irish fans goes back to their previous meeting. Ronaldo celebrated Rúben Neves’ late winner directly in front of defender Jake O’Brien. Some accused him of influencing referees.

Before Thursday’s match, coach Hallgrimsson even warned the referee. He asked Glenn Nyberg to avoid Ronaldo’s influence.

After the match, Hallgrimsson revealed what Ronaldo told him. He said, “Ronaldo complimented me for putting pressure on the referee.” He also said, “It was his action on the pitch that cost him the red card. It had nothing to do with me – unless I got into his head.”

Portugal Coach Defends Ronaldo

Portugal coach Roberto Martínez defended his captain strongly. He praised Ronaldo’s clean record and blamed Ireland’s defenders.

He said, “The red card is just a captain that has never been sent off before in 226 games – I think that just deserves credit – and today, I thought it was a bit harsh because he cares about the team.”

Martínez said defenders kept pulling and pushing Ronaldo for almost an hour. He claimed the incident looked worse on camera.

He added, “The only thing that leaves a bitter taste in my mouth is at the press conference [Wednesday], your coach was talking about the aspect of the referees being influenced, and then a big center-half falls on the floor so dramatically at the turn of Cristiano’s body.”
