Parrott’s Hat Trick Sends Ireland Into FIFA World Cup Playoffs
Troy Parrott’s dramatic hat trick, capped by a stoppage-time winner, fired Ireland to a 3-2 comeback win over Hungary and secured their World Cup playoff spot.

Ireland staged a remarkable comeback to keep its World Cup dream alive with a dramatic 3-2 win over Hungary. Troy Parrott, who surprised Portugal with a 2-0 defeat on Thursday, delivered an even bigger performance on Sunday. He scored a brilliant hat trick that changed Ireland’s fate.

Last-Second Winner Seals Playoff Spot

Parrott completed his hat trick in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time. His final strike sealed a 3-2 victory and guaranteed Ireland a place in the playoffs for next year’s FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

After the match, he shared his joy with RTE, saying, “This is why we love football, because things like this can happen. I said against Portugal that this is what dreams are made of, but this tonight I don’t think I’ll ever have a better night in my whole life.”

Ireland Needed Another Big Result

Ireland’s win over Portugal had kept the team alive in Group F. But they still needed a win against second-placed Hungary to secure the runner-up position. Hungary made it tough by taking a 2-1 lead as the game moved toward the final 10 minutes.

A Fierce Comeback

Ireland refused to give up. Parrott brought the score level by lifting the ball over Hungary goalkeeper Denes Dibusz. As the clock ticked down, he struck again from close range deep into added time to snatch the winning goal.

A Memorable Week for Parrott

Parrott, who plays for AZ Alkmaar in the Dutch Eredivisie, ended the week with five goals in two matches. His performances lifted both his confidence and Ireland’s hopes of reaching the World Cup.

Early Goals Set the Tone

Hungary opened the scoring in the third minute through Daniel Lukacs. Parrott equalised from the penalty spot in the 15th minute. Before halftime, Barnabas Varga restored Hungary’s lead.

However, Parrott’s two late goals turned the match around and pushed Hungary down to third place. Meanwhile, group winner Portugal dominated Armenia with a 9-1 victory.
