The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) approved a US-backed resolution to push peace efforts in Gaza. It also cleared the creation of an international stabilisation force for the region. The vote came at a tense moment, as the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas remains fragile.
The council passed the resolution with a 13-0 vote. China and Russia abstained. The text says member states can join the Trump-led Board of Peace, which will act as a temporary authority. This body will supervise Gaza’s reconstruction and guide its economic recovery. Moreover, it authorises a stabilisation force that will help demilitarise Gaza. It will also handle tasks such as removing weapons and dismantling military sites.
This resolution expands on Donald Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan, which helped secure last month’s ceasefire and brought the release of Israeli hostages.
US Ambassador Mike Waltz said the resolution, which includes Trump’s plan as an annexe, “charts a possible pathway for Palestinian self-determination … where rockets will give way to olive branches and there is a chance to agree on a political horizon.”
Key Points in the Resolution
The proposal has stirred debate in Israel. This is because it mentions the possibility of Palestinian statehood in the future.
According to the text, “conditions may finally be in place for a credible pathway to Palestinian self-determination and statehood” once the Palestinian Authority reforms its governance and Gaza makes progress on redevelopment.
It adds, “The United States will establish a dialogue between Israel and the Palestinians to agree on a political horizon for peaceful and prosperous coexistence.”
Hamas Rejects International Stabilisation Force
However, Hamas immediately rejected the idea of an International Stabilisation Force operating inside Gaza. The group said it does not protect Palestinian rights and instead benefits Israel.
Hamas wrote on Telegram, “The resolution imposes an international guardianship mechanism on the Gaza Strip, which our people and their factions reject.”
The statement continued, “Assigning the international force with tasks and roles inside the Gaza Strip, including disarming the resistance, strips it of its neutrality, and turns it into a party to the conflict in favour of the occupation. Any international force, if established, must be deployed only at the borders to separate forces, monitor the ceasefire, and must be fully under UN supervision.”
Trump Celebrates UNSC Decision
Meanwhile, Donald Trump praised the Security Council vote and called it “historic.” He wrote on Truth Social, “Congratulations to the World on the incredible Vote of the United Nations Security Council, just moments ago, acknowledging and endorsing the BOARD OF PEACE, which will be chaired by me, and include the most powerful and respected Leaders throughout the World.”
