New York City’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani will meet US President Donald Trump at the White House on Friday. He takes office in a few weeks. Trump confirmed the meeting on TruthSocial on Wednesday night and said Mamdani had requested it.
Trump misidentified him as the “Communist Mayor of New York City,” even though Mamdani is a Democratic Socialist. Mamdani has strongly criticised Trump’s immigration policies and his threats to cut federal funds for the city. He sees this meeting as a chance to challenge the president directly.
Mamdani Explains Why He Asked for the Meeting
Mamdani spoke about the upcoming meeting in an interview with MS Now. He said his team contacted the White House to raise concerns faced by New Yorkers.
“I want to just speak plainly to the president about what it means to actually stand up for New Yorkers and the way in which New Yorkers are struggling to afford this city,” Mamdani said.
Trump Publicly Attacks Mamdani
Trump has repeatedly criticised Mamdani. He said Mamdani’s victory would be disastrous for New York, the city where Trump grew up. During the campaign, Trump endorsed Mamdani’s rival, former Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, who ran as an independent.
Trump Privately Sees Him Differently
Despite his public attacks, Trump has privately praised Mamdani. Sources told The New York Times that Trump called him a talented politician. He described Mamdani as slick and a good talker.
On Sunday, Trump told reporters he was open to the meeting. He said, “We want to see everything work out well for New York”.
Mamdani Plans to Find Common Ground
Mamdani will take office on January 1. He said he wants to work with Trump on issues like reducing grocery prices. But he also promised to push back if Trump harms New Yorkers.
Mamdani Sends a Direct Message to Trump
Mamdani addressed Trump in his election night speech. He urged the president to “turn the volume up” and to watch his policies closely.
He also defended immigrants and issued a warning. “Hear me, President Trump, when I say this: To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us,” he said.
