Trump Orders Epstein Files Released Despite Earlier Opposition
Trump signs a new law ordering the release of the Epstein Files within 30 days, but key details may still be withheld by the Justice Department.

US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday night that he had signed the bill to release the infamous Epstein Files. The law requires the Justice Department to publish all information from its Epstein investigation. They must do this within 30 days and in a “searchable and downloadable format.”

Trump earlier opposed releasing the files. However, he changed his stand last week after strong pressure from Epstein’s victims and several Republicans. Congress then passed the bill with overwhelming support.

Congress Approves Bill Almost Unanimously

The House passed the measure with a decisive 427-1 vote. Soon after, the Senate cleared it with unanimous consent. This push came after nearly 20,000 pages from Epstein’s estate became public last week. Several of those documents mentioned Trump.

The files also included 2018 messages in which Epstein said, “I am the one able to take him down” and “I know how dirty Donald is.” Trump and Epstein were friends for years. But Trump said they fell out in the early 2000s, just before Epstein’s first arrest.

Full Release Still Not Guaranteed

There is a catch. Even though Trump signed the bill, the Justice Department can still withhold some parts. They can block information that invades personal privacy or affects an active investigation.

Republican Congressman Thomas Massie warned about this. “I’m concerned that [Trump is] opening a flurry of investigations, and I believe they may be trying to use those investigations as a predicate for not releasing the files,” he said.

Trump Tries to Distance Himself

Trump also attempted to separate himself from the fallout. Speaking on Monday night, he told reporters that Republicans had “nothing to do with Epstein.” He added, “It’s really a Democrat problem. The Democrats were Epstein’s friends, all of them.”

The Justice Department has said it can release the files within 30 days. Still, it is unclear if the agency will reveal all references to Trump in the documents.
