The mortal remains of Wing Commander Namansh Syal, the Indian Air Force pilot who died in the Tejas fighter jet crash at the Dubai Air Show, arrived in Himachal Pradesh on Sunday. The IAF aircraft carrying his body landed at Kangra airport. From there, officials will transport him to his ancestral village, Patiyalkar in Nagrota Bagwan, for his last rites.
Tributes at Sulur Air Force Station
Before his final journey home, the Air Force flew his body to Sulur Air Force Station near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. Coimbatore District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar laid a wreath in his honour. IAF personnel and local officials also paid their respects, marking a solemn farewell to the fallen pilot.
Tejas Crash at Dubai Air Show
Wing Commander Syal lost his life on November 21 during a low-altitude display at Al Maktoum International Airport. The HAL-designed Tejas Light Combat Aircraft suddenly lost control, plunged, and burst into flames. Eyewitness videos captured the jet nosediving and exploding into a massive fireball, followed by thick black smoke.
The Indian Air Force confirmed that Syal suffered fatal injuries. It also ordered a court of inquiry to determine the cause of the crash.
A Distinguished Career Cut Short
Wing Commander Syal, 34, hailed from Patiyalkar village in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district. He studied at Sainik School Sujanpur Tira and joined the IAF as an officer in December 2009.
He leaves behind his wife—also an IAF officer—their daughter, and his parents.
Nation Pays Tribute
The Indian Air Force honoured him as a “dedicated fighter pilot and thorough professional” who served with exceptional skill and commitment. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu shared his grief over the loss. Actor Kamal Haasan also mourned him, calling him “a brave son of India taken far too soon.”
