Lakshya Sen Becomes Australian Open Champion, Eyes Big 2026 Comeback
Lakshya Sen ended a challenging season on a high by dominating Yushi Tanaka to win the Australian Open 2025 men’s singles title in Sydney

Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen shared his thoughts on Sunday after winning the Australian Open 2025 in Sydney, saying he felt relieved and proud to end a difficult season on a strong note.

Lakshya delivered a commanding show in the men’s singles final of the Australian Open Super 500 tournament. He defeated Japan’s Yushi Tanaka 21-15, 21-11 in a one-sided clash that wrapped up in just 38 minutes. With this victory, he also earned USD 475,000 in prize money.

Sen reviews a season of highs and lows

Speaking at a press conference, quoted by the Badminton Association of India (BAI), Lakshya opened up about navigating the ups and downs of the 2025 BWF World Tour. He admitted the year had tested him, especially because of early injuries, but said the victory had boosted his confidence going into the next season.

He explained, “I have seen a lot of ups and downs this season, with a few injuries at the start of the season, but I kept my hard work going throughout the season, and I am very happy to end the season on a good note. I’m very excited, looking forward to the next season now, and I am really happy with the way I played today and this week.”

Staying focused during the final

Sen said he realised during the second set that he was close to lifting the trophy, yet he avoided relaxing too early and kept his focus on each point.

He recalled, “In the second set, I was quite far off in the lead, but I didn’t want to get too inside my head, so I wouldn’t relax too much. In the back of my mind, it was there, but I was just trying to focus on playing one point at a time.”

Lakshya further added that starting strong and maintaining momentum became crucial after a close first set.

He said, “It was important to have a good start and keep the momentum in the last set because it was quite even in the first one. I got a good lead, and I could finish it off. The second set started on a good note, and then I just kept the lead to finish the match.”

A dominant win against an in-form opponent

Yushi Tanaka, who won two Super 300 titles this season at the Orleans Masters and the US Open entered the final in good form. However, Lakshya outclassed him with sharp reflexes, precise placements, and excellent control throughout the match. He barely broke a sweat as he secured the trophy with ease.

A milestone win for Indian badminton

Lakshya’s title makes him only the second Indian to win a crown on the 2025 BWF World Tour. Earlier, Ayush Shetty claimed his first Super 300 title at the US Open. With this Australian Open victory, Lakshya ended his season on a high and carried renewed confidence into the year ahead.
