Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke with US President Donald Trump on Monday. Xi said both countries should “maintain momentum in ties” after their recent meeting in South Korea. According to Xinhua, he also “stressed that Taiwan’s return to China is an important part of the post-war international order.”
Call Follows Trade Truce
The conversation came soon after Washington and Beijing agreed to ease their trade dispute. The US lowered tariffs on Chinese products, while China removed some limits on rare earth exports. This move helped reduce tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
Trump Calls the Interaction “Very Good”
Trump said he had a “very good” phone call with Xi. He noted that they discussed the war in Ukraine, fentanyl trafficking, and a new deal to support American farmers.
In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote, “We have done a good, and very important, deal for our Great Farmers — and it will only get better. Our relationship with China is extremely strong!”
Plans for High-Level Visits
Trump announced that he accepted Xi’s invitation to visit China in April. He also said Xi would travel to the US later this year. These planned visits signal an effort by both sides to keep dialogue open.
China Repeats Its Claim on Taiwan
China continues to claim democratic Taiwan as its territory. Beijing has repeatedly warned that it could use force to bring the island under its control. The issue remains a major point of friction between the two nations.
Leaders Met in October After Years of Tension
Xi and Trump met in October for the first time since 2019. Their meeting drew global attention as both countries remain locked in a long-running trade war. The dispute has disrupted markets and supply chains for months, affecting sectors from soybeans to rare earth minerals.
Xi Praises Progress in Relations
During the call, Xi said their “successful” meeting in South Korea “helped calibrate the course and inject momentum into the steady forward movement of the giant ship of China–US relations.” He added that ties have “remained stable and have continued to improve, which has been widely welcomed by both countries and the international community.”
