India Edge South Africa by 17 Runs in Thrilling First ODI
India edged past South Africa by 17 runs in a thrilling first ODI in Ranchi, powered by Virat Kohli’s 52nd century and a match-defining partnership with Rohit Sharma.

India pulled off a narrow 17-run win over South Africa in the first ODI of the three-match series in Ranchi. After being invited to bat first, India posted 349/8 in their 50 overs. Virat Kohli’s 52nd ODI century and his 136-run partnership with Rohit Sharma, who also scored a blazing half-century, gave India an early advantage.

In the final overs, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja scored quick runs, which helped India put up a huge total on the board. While chasing, South Africa lost three early wickets, but Matthew Breetzke’s composed knock and Marco Jansen’s fiery innings brought them back into the match. The game stayed balanced until the 33rd over.

Kuldeep Yadav, who finished with figures of 4/68 in 10 overs, dismissed both Matthew Breetzke and Marco Jansen in the 34th over and brought India back into control. Corbin Bosch tried his best until the end, but his efforts fell short, and India won the match by 17 runs.

Rohit continued his fine form from Adelaide and scored another half-century. Kohli, who had suffered two ducks earlier in the Australia series, maintained his form and registered another century.

India Overcome Toss Disadvantage

India again lost the toss, making it the 19th straight defeat in ODI tosses. Batting first under afternoon conditions was not easy. The pitch slowed down once the ball got old. Shot-making became difficult. As a result, the run rate dropped after the blazing start.

However, conditions changed in the second innings. Under lights, the pitch became much easier to bat on. Dew made the outfield slippery. The ball skidded on nicely. Batters found it easier to connect.

That is why India badly needed the strong opening stand and the early wickets they picked up later.

Rohit Breaks a World Record

Rohit attacked the bowlers from the start. He smashed successive slog-swept sixes off the off-spinner to close in on a massive record. His third six, a powerful pull off Marco Jansen, pushed him past Shahid Afridi’s tally of 351 ODI sixes. That moment marked a new world record.

However, his innings ended soon after. A short ball from Jansen stayed low and trapped him in front. His dismissal slowed India’s momentum.

Kohli Battles Through a Tough Phase

After Rohit’s departure, the pitch began to show more grip. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Washington Sundar struggled to score freely. They rotated the strike but failed to accelerate. Kohli was left waiting for deliveries. During that period, India scored only 72 runs in more than 16 overs.

Still, Kohli remained patient. He kept running singles. He protected his wicket. When he finally reached his century, emotions poured out. This was his first hundred since February. Questions had been raised about his future. He silenced those doubts with both his bat and his passion.

After reaching 100, Kohli switched gears again. He smashed two more sixes and raced ahead. KL Rahul supported him well at the end and helped India reach 349. India hit 16 sixes in total.

Rana Strikes Early to Rattle South Africa

Harshit Rana made an instant impact with the new ball. In just the second over of the chase, he dismissed both Ryan Rickelton and Quinton de Kock for ducks. One ball swung and came back sharply. The other moved away and found the edge. Aiden Markram soon followed after edging one to the keeper.

South Africa slipped to 11 for 3. The crowd sensed an easy finish for India.

South Africa Fight Back

Despite the early collapse, South Africa refused to surrender. Dewald Brevis, Tony de Zorzi, Marco Jansen and Matthew Breetzke launched a counterattack. Partnerships of 66, 60, and 97 shifted pressure back onto India.

Jansen smashed a 39-ball 70. It became the fastest fifty by a South African batter in India and the second-fastest against India. At one point, the target fell to 123 needed from 17 overs. The game suddenly tilted.

Kuldeep Brings India Back

Just when South Africa looked in control, Kuldeep Yadav made the difference. He removed both Jansen and Breetzke in the same over. That double strike brought India back into the contest. The crowd roared again. The momentum shifted once more.

Still, Corbin Bosch kept swinging. He scored a brave 67 and dragged the match deep. South Africa needed 19 from the final 10 balls.

Arshdeep Holds His Nerve

Bosch found himself alone at the end. The last man had little support to offer. Arshdeep Singh delivered a series of perfect yorkers. Bosch struggled to get the bat under the ball. It was especially painful for him after he had earlier bowled three tight overs at the end to restrict India.

In the last moments, the tension peaked. Bosch had even missed two full tosses in an earlier over, which haunted South Africa. Finally, India held on to seal a hard-fought victory.

Player of the Match: Virat Kohli

A packed stadium watched Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma turn back time with dominant batting. Kohli added another century to his world record tally, while Rohit set a new world record for the most sixes in ODI history. Together, they stitched a crucial 136-run stand. Kohli hit seven sixes. Rohit matched him with power of his own. Their early assault gave India a platform that proved essential later in the game.

This match followed a familiar ODI pattern in India. In the afternoon, the ball does very little but the pitch slows down. Under lights, the new ball offers brief movement. Then the dew makes batting easy and dangerous for bowlers.

India used that short window perfectly. The top order attacked early. The pacers struck with the new ball. And in the end, the spinners and yorkers at the death made the difference. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
