Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Addis Ababa for a two-day State visit to Ethiopia after receiving an invitation from Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. On arrival, Abiy Ahmed personally welcomed Modi at the airport, underlining the importance Ethiopia attaches to the visit.
In a rare and friendly gesture, the Ethiopian Prime Minister also drove Modi to his hotel himself. During the drive, Abiy Ahmed took a special initiative to show Modi the Science Museum and Friendship Park. These visits were not part of the official programme, but they highlighted the personal rapport between the two leaders.
Focus on strengthening bilateral ties
The main aim of the visit is to give fresh momentum to relations between India and Ethiopia. Officials expect discussions to cover key areas such as trade, agriculture, education and technology. Both sides see these sectors as crucial for expanding cooperation and delivering mutual benefits.
Talks on regional and global issues
During his stay, Modi is expected to hold high-level talks with Ethiopian leaders on regional and global matters that concern both countries. These discussions are likely to reflect shared interests in peace, development and cooperation across Africa and beyond.
Engagement with diaspora and business leaders
Modi will also interact with members of the Indian community living in Ethiopia. In addition, he is scheduled to address a joint business forum, where leaders from both countries will explore new economic and investment opportunities.
Overall, the visit is being viewed as a significant step in strengthening India’s partnership with Ethiopia, Africa’s second-most populous nation, and in reinforcing India’s broader engagement with the African continent.
