India’s T20 vice-captain Shubman Gill faced a major setback on Saturday. The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced the 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup 2026. Gill did not make the cut.
The decision shocked many. Gill recently became vice-captain under Suryakumar Yadav. He also opened the batting with Abhishek Sharma. Despite this, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee decided to leave him out.
Selectors press panic button after poor form
Gill struggled for form in recent T20I matches. The selectors took note and acted quickly. They decided to move away from Gill and handed the second opening slot to Sanju Samson.
Many debated Gill’s place in the playing XI. Still, few expected the selectors to drop him from the squad entirely. According to The Indian Express, Gill learned about his omission only when the squad was announced. The committee had already finalised its decision a few days earlier.
Pitch conditions influence selection call
The report said pitch conditions played a key role in Gill’s exclusion. India will play each match of the T20 World Cup at a different venue. As the tournament progresses, pitches are expected to slow down.
On such surfaces, powerplay runs become crucial. The selectors felt that aggressive starts would decide matches. They trusted Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan more than Gill in this area.
Gill lost ground because he could not match the trio’s explosive hitting at the top of the order.
Rinku Singh recalled to ease pressure on Hardik
The selectors also reviewed India’s finishing concerns. Recent matches exposed India’s heavy dependence on Hardik Pandya to finish innings. To fix this, the selectors brought back Rinku Singh. They believe Rinku can share the finishing responsibility and reduce the burden on Hardik.
Ishan Kishan named backup opener and keeper
Ishan Kishan earned a place as the backup opener and wicketkeeper. His strong performances for Jharkhand in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy helped his case.
Gill’s recent form, fitness concerns, and strike rate worked against him. Still, the selectors insisted that the decision was tactical.
Ajit Agarkar explains Gill’s omission
Selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar addressed Gill’s exclusion at the press conference. He stressed that team balance mattered most.
"You're looking at combinations at the moment. Someone has to miss out when you take 15. And unfortunately, it's him (Gill). It's not because he's not a good player," he said.
