US Considers Military and Diplomatic Options to Acquire Greenland
The United States is weighing military and diplomatic options to acquire Greenland, triggering strong opposition from Denmark and European allies who insist the Arctic island belongs to its people.

The United States is considering several possible ways to acquire Greenland, including the use of military force, the White House has said. President Donald Trump’s interest in taking control of the Arctic island has intensified in recent days, especially after the US military took control of Venezuela last weekend.

According to the White House, Greenland is viewed as a matter of “national security priority.” Officials said the administration is actively discussing how to move forward on this goal.

“The president and his team are discussing a range of options to pursue this important foreign policy goal, and of course, utilizing the US military is always an option at the Commander-in-Chief’s disposal,” the White House said.

European Leaders Rally Behind Denmark

The White House statement came shortly after several European leaders expressed strong support for Denmark. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen had earlier warned that any US attack on Greenland would effectively signal the end of Nato.

European governments made it clear that they oppose any attempt to seize the island by force and stressed that Greenland’s future cannot be decided by outside powers.

Is Washington Planning to Buy the Island?

While military action has been mentioned as one possibility, US officials are also discussing peaceful options. The Trump administration is reportedly considering buying Greenland from Denmark instead of taking it by force.

In addition, US officials are examining the idea of forming a Compact of Free Association with Greenland. Such an agreement would give the territory more autonomy while keeping it closely tied to Washington.

In response to these developments, both Greenland and Denmark have asked for an urgent meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to address Washington’s claims and intentions.

Strategic Importance Draws Global Interest

President Trump is not the first world leader to show interest in Greenland. The island has drawn attention from several major powers due to its large and largely untapped rare earth mineral reserves. These resources are critical for modern technology and defence industries.

Russia and China have also shown interest in Greenland, adding to concerns among Western allies about growing competition in the Arctic region.

‘Greenland Belongs to Its People’

Leaders from several major European countries issued a joint statement strongly supporting Denmark and Greenland. They made it clear that decisions about the island’s future must rest only with its people.

“Greenland belongs to its people. It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland,” the statement said.

The leaders also highlighted the importance of collective security in the Arctic and reaffirmed their commitment to Nato cooperation.

“Nato has made clear that the Arctic region is a priority and European Allies are stepping up,” the statement added. “We and many other Allies have increased our presence, activities and investments, to keep the Arctic safe and to deter adversaries.”

Rising Tensions Over Arctic Control

The renewed US push to acquire Greenland has raised serious concerns across Europe. While Washington continues to explore its options, Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected any suggestion of a takeover.

As global competition in the Arctic increases, European leaders insist that stability, cooperation, and respect for sovereignty must remain central to any discussions about the region’s future.
