Trump and Petro Hold First Call After Bitter Public Clash
Trump and Colombia’s Gustavo Petro held their first phone call after a bitter public clash, discussing drugs, Venezuela, and agreeing to meet amid rising US–Latin America tensions.

US President Donald Trump and Colombian President Gustavo Petro spoke by phone for the first time after a sharp and very public dispute. The call came at a tense moment, as relations between the United States and Latin America continue to worsen.

The conversation took place only days after Trump accused Petro of being “sick” and a cocaine trafficker. Despite that hostile exchange, both leaders agreed to open direct communication.

Leaders Discuss Drugs and Agree to Meet

During the call, Trump and Petro talked about counter-narcotics policy and other issues that have divided them in recent months. They also agreed to meet in person in the near future.

Trump confirmed the call on his social media platform, Truth Social.

“It was a Great Honor to speak with the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, who called to explain the situation of drugs and other disagreements that we have had,” Trump wrote.

“I appreciated his call and tone, and look forward to meeting him in the near future," he added.

Petro later told supporters in Bogotá that the two leaders had also discussed Venezuela.

Call Comes After Military Threat Warning

The timing of the call drew attention. It came just days after Trump warned that the United States could consider military action in Colombia. That warning followed the recent capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Because of this context, the call is seen as a significant step, even though tensions remain high.

A Relationship That Has Grown Increasingly Sour

The relationship between Trump and Petro has steadily worsened since last year. In September, the United States cancelled Petro’s visa after he urged soldiers to disobey Trump’s orders.

Washington has also imposed personal sanctions on Petro and members of his inner circle. US officials accuse them of enabling drug trafficking. In addition, the US “decertified” Colombia as a partner in the war on drugs, further damaging ties between the two countries.

Once close allies, the United States and Colombia now face a strained and uncertain relationship.

Behind-the-Scenes Diplomacy

According to Bloomberg, the phone call was arranged by Colombia’s ambassador to the United States, Gabriel García Peña. He is known for maintaining strong connections in Washington.

Meanwhile, Blu Radio reported that the conversation lasted around 45 minutes. Analysts say the long-term impact of the call remains unclear, but it could shape future engagement between the two leaders.

Rising Regional Tensions After Venezuela Crisis

Tensions across Latin America reached a peak after Trump launched months of pressure against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. That campaign escalated sharply in early 2026.

The United States carried out two strikes in Caracas and later “captured” Maduro and his wife. The couple is now being held at a detention centre in New York. They face charges related to drug trafficking.

These developments have reshaped regional politics and added urgency to diplomatic contacts like the Trump–Petro phone call.
