Violence against members of the Hindu community in Bangladesh continues to rise. On Thursday, a Hindu man named Joy Mahapatro was killed in the Sunamganj district.
According to his family, a local person attacked him. They said the attacker beat Mahapatro and also poisoned him. After the assault, his condition worsened.
Doctors admitted him to the intensive care unit at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. However, he later died during treatment.
Authorities have not yet released full details of the case. Officials said they are still gathering information.
Another Death During Mob Chase
This killing came only days after another tragic incident involving a Hindu man. A 25-year-old named Mithun Sarkar died while trying to escape a mob.
The incident happened after locals accused him of theft. As the crowd chased him, Sarkar jumped into a canal to save himself. He drowned during the escape attempt.
Police later recovered his body on Tuesday afternoon. Sarkar was from Bhandarpur village.
Surge in Attacks Ahead of Elections
In recent weeks, attacks against religious minorities have increased sharply across Bangladesh. The violence comes as the country prepares for its first parliamentary elections since the 2024 uprising.
That uprising led to the removal of the Sheikh Hasina government. Since then, law and order concerns have grown, especially for minority communities.
Human rights observers say these incidents are not isolated. Instead, they point to a wider failure of the state to protect vulnerable groups.
Arrest in Earlier Lynching Case
Meanwhile, police made an arrest on Thursday in another high-profile case. Officers detained the main suspect in the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu garment worker.
Officials identified the accused as Yasin Arafat. He is a former teacher. Investigators believe he played a key role in planning and carrying out the attack.
Details of Dipu Chandra Das Killing
Dipu Chandra Das was 27 years old. He was killed on December 18 in the Mymensingh district. The attack followed allegations of blasphemy. Before the killing, factory supervisors allegedly forced him to resign from his job.
After that, attackers dragged him out of the workplace and handed him over to an angry local mob. The mob beat him to death. They then hung his body from a tree and set it on fire.
Investigators later said that several of his co-workers were also involved in the assault.
