Mumbai Indians (MI) outclassed Gujarat Giants (GG) by seven wickets with four balls to spare in the 6th match of the Women’s Premier League 2026 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. After being invited to bat first, Gujarat Giants posted 192/5 on the scoreboard, powered by a blazing knock from Georgia Wareham. Bharti Fulmali and Kanika Ahuja also made valuable contributions with their fiery knocks, helping Gujarat Giants put up a strong total.
In the chase, Mumbai Indians lost two early wickets. However, a brilliant innings from Harmanpreet Kaur, along with her partnerships with Amanjot Kaur and Nicola Carey, guided MI to the target. Harmanpreet remained unbeaten on 71 off 43 balls and controlled the innings with composure and authority.
MI Extend Dominance Over Giants
With this win, Mumbai Indians continued their complete dominance over Gujarat Giants, extending their head-to-head record to 8-0. The result also strengthened a remarkable trend. MI have never lost a WPL match when Harmanpreet scores a half-century. This was the 10th such occasion, underlining her importance to the team.
Giants Make Flying Start With The Bat
Gujarat Giants began strongly after being asked to bat first. Sophie Devine and Beth Mooney attacked early, striking four boundaries off Hayley Matthews in the second over.
Devine survived an early scare when Shabnim Ismail forced an edge in the opening over, but wicketkeeper G Kamalini failed to hold on. However, the reprieve did not last long. Ismail struck again in the third over, dismissing Devine for 8, this time with Kamalini completing the catch.
Ahuja And Mooney Build Solid Platform
With Anushka Sharma ruled out due to injury, Kanika Ahuja was promoted to number three. She made an immediate impact, opening her account with a confident cover drive. She then built momentum alongside Mooney, keeping the scoreboard moving.
After Mooney was dismissed, Ahuja continued her positive approach with Ash Gardner. Their partnership pushed the Giants to 99 for 3 by the end of the 10th over. Gardner fell in the 10th over, and Ahuja followed soon after in the 11th, but the foundation had already been laid.
Retired-Out Moment And Late Assault
Following Ahuja’s dismissal, MI tightened their grip. Ayushi Soni struggled to find timing, while Georgia Wareham kept scoring freely. At the end of the 16th over, Soni retired out on 7 off 10 balls, becoming the first player in WPL history to do so.
The decision opened the door for Bharti Fulmali, and she made full use of the opportunity. She survived two lbw appeals in the 17th over, both overturned in her favour. Fulmali then launched a fierce counterattack. She struck two fours and a six off Carey in the 19th over and went even harder in the final over.
Fulmali smashed two fours and two sixes off Amanjot Kaur as the Giants collected 39 runs in the last two overs to finish on an imposing 192.
MI Begin Chase With Intent
Hayley Matthews returned to the top of the order after missing the opening two matches due to injury. Although MI lost Kamalini early in the third over, Matthews ensured a brisk start. She scored 22 off 12 balls before being dismissed, keeping MI ahead of the required rate.
That wicket brought Harmanpreet and Amanjot together, and the pair focused on rebuilding without losing momentum.
Amanjot Steps Up With Aggression
Amanjot Kaur soon found her range. She punished loose deliveries from Georgia Wareham and Tanuja Kanwar, hitting a series of boundaries. Harmanpreet played the anchor role, rotating strike and scoring steadily through the first 10 overs.
Once settled, Amanjot shifted gears. She took on Renuka Singh and Ash Gardner with cleanly hit sixes, swinging the momentum back in MI’s favour. Gujarat Giants finally broke the partnership when Sophie Devine dismissed Amanjot with a slower ball, ending a crucial 72-run stand.
Harmanpreet Takes Complete Control
Harmanpreet remained calm and in command as Nicola Carey joined her at the crease. At that stage, MI needed 84 runs from 48 balls.
Carey turned the match decisively in the 16th over, hammering five boundaries off Renuka Singh, who struggled with her accuracy. The over dramatically reduced the target to 39 runs needed from 24 balls.
Missed Chances Prove Costly
Harmanpreet reached her half-century off just 33 balls and continued to punish anything loose. Gujarat Giants added to their troubles with poor fielding, dropping three chances of the MI captain.
Harmanpreet made them pay. She capitalised on the width offered by the bowlers and kept the chase firmly under control. With four runs needed off five balls, she sealed the match in style, driving a boundary through the gap between deep square leg and deep midwicket.
Gujarat Giants batters did their best. Georgia Wareham made an important contribution, while the fiery knocks by Bharti Fulmali and Kanika Ahuja helped Gujarat Giants post an above-par total on the board. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur then produced a masterclass under pressure to steer Mumbai Indians to a seven-wicket victory over Gujarat Giants. MI successfully chased a challenging target of 193, registering the second-highest run chase in Women’s Premier League history. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
