Gujarat Giants (GG) outclassed UP Warriorz (UPW) by 45 runs in the 14th match of the Women’s Premier League 2026 at Kotambi in Vadodara. Gujarat Giants posted 153/8 in 20 overs, led by a superb unbeaten half-century from Sophie Devine, who delivered under pressure. Beth Mooney also contributed 38 runs.
For UP Warriorz, Kranti Gaud (2/18 in 4 overs) and Sophie Ecclestone were the standout bowlers.
In reply, UP Warriorz lost momentum in the middle overs. Rajeshwari Gayakwad (3/16 in 4 overs), Sophie Devine (2/16 in 3.3 overs), and Renuka Singh (2/20 in 4 overs) tore through the batting line-up. As a result, UP Warriorz were bowled out for 108, with 15 balls remaining. Phoebe Litchfield was the top scorer for UP Warriorz.
Kranti Gaud leads spin squeeze in powerplay
The pitch had visible cracks and offered help to bowlers. Kranti Gaud used the conditions well. She bowled with control and troubled the batters early. She conceded two boundaries in her first over, including one off an inside edge from Danni Wyatt-Hodge, who replaced Georgia Wareham. Gaud quickly corrected herself.
In her next over, Gaud bowled Wyatt-Hodge with a sharp delivery. She hit a cracked area outside off, and the ball moved just enough to beat the batter. Soon after, Gaud dismissed Anushka Sharma, who edged one for four before nicking the next to the wicketkeeper. Gujarat Giants scored 52 for 2 in the powerplay, but Gaud finished that phase with impressive figures. She ended her spell with 2 for 18.
The other bowlers followed her lead. Even with Beth Mooney set at the crease, Gujarat Giants found scoring difficult. In the ten overs after the powerplay, they hit only three sixes and one four. The surface stayed slow despite early dew. Sophie Ecclestone, Chloe Tryon, Deepti Sharma, and Asha Sobhana bowled into tight areas and denied easy runs. Gujarat Giants faced 50 dot balls in the first 16 overs.
Devine’s late burst lifts Gujarat Giants to safety
Sophie Devine hit two of the four boundaries scored in the middle overs. She struck a six early in her innings but then slowed down. She made only 30 runs from her first 33 balls. Devine got a major reprieve when Phoebe Litchfield dropped a simple catch at deep midwicket. That moment instead led to the run-out of Bharti Fulmali, who was ball-watching at the non-striker’s end.
For most of Gujarat Giants’ innings, Sophie Devine tried to hit through the line but struggled for timing. She ran hard between the wickets and looked tired as UP Warriorz bowlers kept things tight. However, Devine showed her experience when it mattered most. She stayed till the end and finished unbeaten on 50 from 42 balls. Her effort helped Gujarat Giants reach 153 for 8, a total that proved 45 runs too strong for UP Warriorz.
UP Warriorz batting collapses under pressure
UP Warriorz never found momentum in the chase. Kiran Navgire had a strong day in the field but continued her poor run with the bat. She lost balance while attempting a flick and was bowled for a two-ball duck. Meg Lanning looked comfortable before suffering an unlucky dismissal. She tried to pull Kashvee Gautam, but the ball deflected off her thigh guard and rolled onto the stumps.
Phoebe Litchfield started well and found regular boundaries in the powerplay. She even played a reverse sweep for four against Ashleigh Gardner. However, she repeated the shot two balls later and got caught by Renuka Singh at short third. From there, the middle order failed to respond.
Harleen Deol struggled on the slow pitch and managed only 3 runs from 12 balls. Deepti Sharma, Shweta Sehrawat, and Asha Sobhana all fell while trying to force the scoring rate. Rajeshwari Gayakwad, brought in for Tanuja Kanwar, used her variations effectively and tightened the screws. UP Warriorz eventually fell well short of the target, handing Gujarat Giants a much-needed win.
The difference between the two teams became clear in the middle overs. Gujarat Giants scored 59 runs for the loss of three wickets between overs 7 and 16. UP Warriorz, in contrast, collapsed badly in the same phase. They managed only 50 runs but lost six wickets. That period decided the match.
The result also reflected the different conditions between Navi Mumbai and Vadodara. Kranti Gaud and Sophie Ecclestone picked up two wickets each to restrict Gujarat Giants. However, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Renuka Singh, and Devine produced stronger bowling performances to dismantle UP Warriorz. Devine also moved to the top of the bowling charts with 11 wickets.
The win ended Gujarat Giants’ three-match losing streak. They broke away from a four-team logjam on the points table and climbed to second place. UP Warriorz, meanwhile, suffered their fourth defeat in six games. They now face must-win situations in their final two matches after another long break.
