Sri Lanka Spinners Shine in 19-Run Win Over England in First ODI
Sri Lanka’s spinners dominated as they beat England by 19 runs in the first ODI at Colombo to take a 1–0 lead in the three-match series.

Sri Lanka outclassed England by 19 runs in the first ODI of the three-match series at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Sri Lanka posted 271/6 on the scoreboard, helped by superb unbeaten knocks from Kusal Mendis (93*) and Janith Liyanage (46). Adil Rashid (3/44 in 10 overs) was the most successful bowler for England.

Chasing a target of 272, Ben Duckett and Joe Root gave England a solid start, but Sri Lanka’s spinners dictated terms and closed the game out with ease. Four Sri Lankan spinners shared six wickets, and England never truly escaped the pressure. With this win, Sri Lanka took a 1–0 lead in the series.

Root and Duckett fight, but tempo stays slow

England received solid contributions from Joe Root and Ben Duckett, who both scored measured half-centuries. However, their efforts did not translate into momentum. England’s run rate stayed below five an over for most of the chase.

As a result, England fell 19 runs short, delivering a flat batting display that echoed their past struggles in South Asian conditions.

Sri Lanka build smartly, not explosively

Earlier, Sri Lanka had laid the foundation with calm and sensible batting. Kusal Mendis anchored the innings with 93 not out off 117 balls. Meanwhile, Janith Liyanage added a useful 46, and Dunith Wellalage provided the late surge with 25 not out off 12 balls.

Sri Lanka finished on 271 for 6. While the total looked competitive rather than massive, Khettarama is known as a difficult venue for chasing, especially against spin.

Chase becomes steep despite late hope

England stayed in the contest until late. However, by the 40th over, Sri Lanka had effectively locked the game. At that stage, England needed more than 10 runs an over with only four wickets left.

Jamie Overton offered a brief glimmer of hope with late hitting. England needed 20 runs in the final over, and Overton still had a chance to pull off a stunning finish. However, he turned down a single on the first ball and then holed out attempting a big shot on the next.

Middle overs undo England

England never got ahead of the required rate at any point. Still, the century stand for the second wicket between Root and Duckett looked like a possible launchpad.

Both batters scored heavily square of the wicket. However, the dry pitch offered sharp turn, and Sri Lanka’s bowlers kept tight lines. As pressure mounted, mistakes followed.

Duckett fell lbw while attempting a reverse sweep against Jeffrey Vandersay. Soon after, Root was also given lbw, with Dhananjaya de Silva overturning the on-field call via review. Harry Brook charged down the track and was stumped, while Jacob Bethell met the same fate against Wellalage.

England lost five wickets between the 28th and 40th overs, and the chase slipped away.

Bowlers hold nerve at the death

Although Sri Lanka’s seamers leaked more runs than the spinners, they held their nerve during Overton’s late assault. Pramod Madushan claimed the final wicket and finished with the best figures of the match, taking 3 for 39 in 5.2 overs.

Mendis anchors Sri Lanka’s innings

Earlier in the match, Mendis played the key role for Sri Lanka. He began cautiously after arriving in the 11th over, facing 12 scoreless balls, most of them from England’s legspinners.

Gradually, he found scoring options, especially square of the wicket. He struck Rehan Ahmed for back-to-back boundaries behind point in the 15th over and rotated the strike well as England tightened the screws.

Mendis reached his fifty off 62 balls. After the dismissal of Liyanage, with whom he shared an 88-run stand, he slowed further, focusing on singles and twos rather than riskier shots.

Wellalage provides the finishing punch

Although Mendis managed only one boundary after the 40th over, Sri Lanka found acceleration through Wellalage. The all-rounder smashed three fours and a six in his brief stay.

In the final over, Wellalage took particular liking to Overton, scoring heavily in an over that went for 23 runs. While Mendis hovered in the 90s late on, Wellalage dominated the strike and ensured Sri Lanka crossed a strong total.

Rashid shines for England

For England, Adil Rashid stood out with the ball. He struck early by deceiving Kamil Mishara with a googly and later trapped Dhananjaya de Silva lbw through flight and drift.

Later, in the 43rd over, Rashid cramped Liyanage and took a straightforward return catch, ending a dangerous phase. Despite his efforts, England could not break Sri Lanka’s control.

After a tough Ashes tour, England found little comfort in Colombo. What remained of their attacking Bazball style ran into a classic spin choke. Although England showed brief moments of control, in the end Sri Lanka’s disciplined batting and relentless spin bowling proved decisive. England’s cautious chase never gathered pace, and the pressure steadily mounted. On a surface built for patience and precision, Sri Lanka played smarter cricket and fully deserved the win.
