Carlos Alcaraz Storms into First Australian Open Final After Epic Battle
Carlos Alcaraz reached his first Australian Open final after a dramatic five-set win over Alexander Zverev, showing remarkable courage despite cramps and exhaustion.

World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz booked his place in his first-ever Australian Open final after a marathon victory over third seed Alexander Zverev on Friday. The 22-year-old Spaniard survived a tense five-hour, five-set battle to win 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-7 (4), 7-5.

With the win, Alcaraz advanced to Sunday’s final, where he will face the winner of the second semifinal between Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic.

Mental strength shines in deciding set

Alcaraz showed immense mental toughness by recovering from a break down in the fifth set. Even under extreme physical stress, he refused to give in and turned the match in his favour at the crucial moment.

This comeback highlighted his ability to perform on the biggest stage, especially in Grand Slam matches where pressure and fatigue often decide the outcome.

Completes Grand Slam final set at young age

With this result, Alcaraz has now reached the final of all four Grand Slam tournaments in his career. He has already played and won finals at Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open.

He also made history by becoming the youngest man in the Open Era to reach finals at all four majors. This achievement breaks a record held by Jim Courier since 1993.

Chance to complete Career Grand Slam

Alcaraz now stands on the verge of another major milestone. If he wins the Australian Open final on Sunday, he will become the youngest player ever to complete the Career Grand Slam.

Such an achievement would further cement his status as one of the most complete players of his generation.

Injury scare threatens Alcaraz’s run

The match took a dramatic turn in the third set when Alcaraz suffered a visible physical issue. At 4-4, he pulled up in clear discomfort, appearing to struggle with cramps.

He received medical attention during the changeover, which angered Zverev, as medical timeouts are not permitted solely for cramping.

Fights on despite physical limitations

Although Alcaraz continued playing, his movement was noticeably affected. He went on to lose the third set, marking the first set he dropped in the tournament.

After consuming pickle juice, a common remedy for cramps, Alcaraz slowly regained some control. Despite still being far from full fitness, he continued to battle and pushed the match into a deciding fifth set.

Crowd support and late comeback break Zverev

In the final set, Alcaraz once again found himself under pressure. He fell a break behind but refused to surrender. With the crowd firmly behind him, he mounted a spirited comeback and eventually closed out the match, leaving Zverev devastated.

The victory marked Alcaraz’s eighth Grand Slam final and his fourth in a row, underlining his consistency at the highest level.

Alcaraz on belief and resilience

After the match, Alcaraz spoke about the mindset that carried him through the physical and emotional battle.

“Believing all the time," Alcaraz said.

“I always say that you have to believe in yourself no matter what, no matter what struggles you’ve been through, you’ve gotta still believe in yourself all the time."

Reflecting on the physical toll of the match, he added, “I was struggling in the middle of the third set. Basically, it was one of the most demanding matches that I have ever played in my short career."
