Trump Plans Two-Year Shutdown of Kennedy Center for Major Renovation
US President Donald Trump announced plans to shut the Kennedy Center for nearly two years from July 4 for a major renovation, pending board approval.

US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington will close for about two years. The closure will begin on July 4, which marks the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Trump said the shutdown is part of a large renovation plan. The project still needs approval from the Kennedy Center’s board. Trump appointed the board after becoming its chairman.

Trump Tightens Grip on the Center

Since returning to office, Trump has taken firm control of the Kennedy Center. The institution was once non-partisan. Trump has criticised some of its programmes as too “woke.”

He has also added his own name to the building’s facade. The move has sparked controversy in the arts community.

Trump Explains Reason for Shutdown

Trump shared his decision on his Truth Social platform. He wrote, “I have determined that the fastest way to bring The Trump Kennedy Center to the highest level of Success, Beauty, and Grandeur, is to cease Entertainment Operations for an approximately two year period of time.”

He said the plan depends on approval from the board, which he personally selected after taking charge as chairman.

All Performances to Stop During Renovation

Trump said ongoing events would slow down construction work. He said concerts, operas, musicals, ballet shows, and interactive arts would interfere with the renovation.

Because of this, he said a complete temporary shutdown is necessary.

“The Trump Kennedy Center, if temporarily closed for Construction, Revitalization, and Complete Rebuilding, can be, without question, the finest Performing Arts Facility of its kind, anywhere in the World,” he said.

He added, “America will be very proud of its new and beautiful Landmark for many generations to come.”

Scope of Rebuilding Remains Unclear

Trump referred to a “complete rebuilding” of the center. However, he did not explain how extensive the changes would be.

The Kennedy Center opened in 1971. It serves as a living memorial to former US president John F Kennedy. Trump has repeatedly said the building is outdated and needs major upgrades.

Artists Pull Out After Board Changes

Since Trump reshaped the board and took over as chairman, several high-profile artists have cancelled appearances. These include the musical “Hamilton,” opera singer Renee Fleming, and composer Philip Glass.

The Washington National Opera also announced plans to leave the Kennedy Center. It has called the venue home since the center opened.

Reasons Behind the Exit

Some artists and organisations have openly cited Trump’s involvement. Others pointed to the addition of his name to the building.

A few groups mentioned logistical challenges and financial concerns. Together, these developments have raised questions about the center’s future during the planned closure.
