Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s aircraft made a historic touchdown on the Northeast’s first Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) built on a national highway in Assam on Saturday. The landing took place on the specially developed stretch at Moran Bypass in Dibrugarh district.
This marks an important step in strengthening both strategic readiness and infrastructure in the region. The 4.2-kilometre-long facility has been constructed at a cost of Rs 100 crore. It is designed to allow Indian Air Force fighter jets and transport aircraft to land and take off during emergencies. This is the first such installation in the Northeast.

Earlier in the day, Modi arrived at the Chabua airfield, where several senior leaders welcomed him. These included Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and other state officials.
From Chabua, the Prime Minister boarded an Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft and travelled to the Emergency Landing Facility for the historic landing.
Officials said the dual-use infrastructure can handle fighter aircraft weighing up to 40 tonnes. It can also support transport aircraft with a maximum take-off weight of up to 74 tonnes.
Prime Minister Watches Air Force Show
After landing, Modi watched a 20-minute aerial display by the Indian Air Force. The show featured fighter jets, transport aircraft, and helicopters. The display highlighted the operational strength and readiness of the new facility.
Bridge Inauguration in Guwahati
Later, the Prime Minister is scheduled to travel to Guwahati to inaugurate the Rs 3,000-crore Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu over the Brahmaputra River.
The 1.24-kilometre-long bridge will connect Guwahati with North Guwahati. It is expected to reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity in the region. Officials said the project was completed under challenging river conditions.
After completing the inaugurations, Modi is also expected to address workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party as part of his visit to Assam.
