The 32nd match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 between Ireland and Zimbabwe was abandoned due to heavy rain. Not a single ball was bowled, and even the toss could not take place.
As a result, both teams shared one point each. Zimbabwe moved to five points from three matches and secured a place in the Super Eight round. Meanwhile, Australia and Ireland were knocked out after the group stage.
Zimbabwe Qualify Despite No Play
Zimbabwe had already defeated Oman and Australia earlier in the tournament. Therefore, they needed just one point from this match to qualify. The washout in Pallekele ensured they achieved that target.
Officials called off the game at 5:30 pm local time, around two and a half hours after the scheduled start. Persistent rain made it impossible to begin the match.
Australia’s hopes were already hanging by a thread after their defeat to Sri Lanka. The abandoned match officially confirmed their elimination, as they remained stuck on two points.
Rain Dominates the Evening in Pallekele
Long before the scheduled start, the entire square at the Pallekele ground was covered with blue sheets. Large puddles formed on top of the covers. Although the rain was not extremely heavy, it continued steadily.
Ground staff tried to dry the covers repeatedly, but the constant drizzle prevented any improvement in conditions. Eventually, officials decided there was no chance of play.
Zimbabwe’s Historic Achievement
Zimbabwe will now move into a tough Super Eight group that includes India, West Indies, and South Africa. The top two teams from the group will qualify for the semi-finals.
For Zimbabwe, this marks a significant milestone. It is the first time they have reached the Super Eight stage of a World Cup. Two years ago, in 2024, they failed to qualify for the tournament itself.
Ireland, who still had a slim chance of advancing with a win, exit the competition after the group stage.
