Mexico Faces Wave of Violence Following Death of ‘El Mencho’
Twenty-five National Guard members died in cartel retaliation after Mexican forces captured and killed CJNG leader Nemesio Oseguera, known as “El Mencho,” triggering violent attacks across several states.

Mexico plunged into violence after security forces captured and killed notorious drug lord Nemesio Oseguera, known as “El Mencho.” Cartel gunmen launched deadly attacks in response, killing dozens of security personnel.

Cartel attacks kill security forces

Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch told Reuters that cartel members killed 25 National Guard troops and one private security guard. The attacks came soon after authorities confirmed Oseguera’s death.

Special forces capture El Mencho

Oseguera led the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel and topped Mexico’s most-wanted list. Mexican special forces tracked him down in Tapalpa, Jalisco state. They injured him during the operation. He later died in custody, Reuters reported, citing the defence ministry.

Defence Minister Ricardo Trevilla said investigators received crucial information from a romantic partner of the cartel leader. The United States had offered a $15 million reward for details leading to his arrest.

Violence spreads across states

After his death, cartel fighters blocked highways and set vehicles on fire. They attacked police and military units in several areas.

Harfuch said El Mencho’s death triggered “27 cowardly attacks against authorities in Jalisco.” He confirmed that security forces killed 30 cartel members during the clashes. One civilian also died. Authorities arrested at least 70 suspects across seven states.

“We are closely monitoring for any kind of reaction or restructuring within the cartel that could lead to violence,” Harfuch said during the president’s daily press conference.

US urges tougher crackdown

US President Donald Trump responded quickly. He called on Mexico to intensify its fight against drug cartels.

“Mexico must step up their effort on Cartels and Drugs!” he wrote on social media.

El Mencho’s death deals a major blow to one of Mexico’s most violent criminal groups. However, officials remain on high alert as they watch for further retaliation or internal power struggles within the cartel.
