A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck off Indonesia’s Sumatra island on Tuesday. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the magnitude and location of the tremor.
Epicentre Near Seismically Active Zone
The quake hit offshore in waters close to Sumatra. This region often experiences earthquakes because it lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” Several major tectonic plates meet in this zone, which makes it highly prone to seismic activity.
As a result, earthquakes are common in this part of Indonesia.
No Immediate Reports of Damage
So far, officials have not reported any casualties or major damage. However, authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
Rescue and disaster response teams continue to assess the affected areas. More information is expected as officials gather detailed reports from local agencies.
