India Boosts LPG Production as West Asia Tensions Threaten Supply
India has ordered oil refiners to increase LPG production and give priority to households as tensions in West Asia raise fears of supply disruptions.

The Indian government has asked oil refiners to increase the production of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Officials want to make sure that households continue to receive cooking gas without disruption.

The decision comes as tensions rise in West Asia and global energy markets remain unstable. The conflict has raised fears of supply disruptions.

India depends heavily on imported LPG. A large share of these shipments passes through the vital Strait of Hormuz. Any disruption along this route could affect India’s supplies.

Government Gives Priority to Domestic Consumers

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has directed oil refineries to maximise LPG output. The ministry wants refiners to send the extra supply mainly to domestic consumers.

The ministry said, “In light of current geopolitical disruptions to fuel supply and constraints on supply of LPG, Ministry has issued orders to oil refineries for higher LPG production and using such extra production for domestic LPG use.”

Officials said households will get priority access to LPG. The government wants to ensure that cooking gas remains available even if the global crisis worsens.

Government Introduces 25-Day Booking Gap

The government has also introduced a new rule for LPG bookings. Domestic consumers must now wait 25 days before booking another cylinder.

Officials say the rule will stop panic buying and hoarding. It will also help ensure fair distribution of cylinders across the country.

Authorities Review Supply for Commercial Users

At the same time, the government is reviewing LPG allocations for commercial users. These include hotels, restaurants and industries that use LPG in their operations.

Officials say the review will help protect household supply if the situation becomes more difficult.

India’s Import Dependence Raises Concerns

India relies heavily on LPG imports to meet demand. Domestic production covers only part of the country’s needs.

Because of this dependence, global supply disruptions can quickly affect India. Policymakers are closely monitoring the situation as tensions rise in West Asia and oil prices fluctuate.

Energy experts say protecting LPG supply is critical. Millions of households across India depend on cooking gas every day. Any shortage could affect daily life.

Government Takes Steps to Stabilise Supplies

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said it has started steps to stabilise LPG availability. Officials took the decision after supply disruptions linked to global geopolitical tensions.

The ministry said oil refineries must increase LPG production and send the additional supply to domestic consumers.

“In light of current geopolitical disruptions to fuel supply and constraints on supply of LPG, the ministry has issued orders to oil refineries for higher LPG production and using such extra production for domestic LPG use,” the ministry said.

For now, the government plans to increase production, tighten distribution rules and prioritise household consumption. These measures aim to protect Indian consumers from global energy shocks.
