Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet could soon enter the world of Middle-earth. Reports suggest that she is in discussions to join the cast of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, a new film based on the fantasy universe created by J. R. R. Tolkien.

The upcoming project will be directed by Andy Serkis. He will also return to play his famous character Gollum, the troubled creature first introduced in the original film trilogy directed by Peter Jackson.

Although Warner Bros. has not officially confirmed the full cast, industry speculation suggests that several actors from the earlier films may return. Elijah Wood is rumored to reprise his role as Frodo Baggins, while Ian McKellen may once again portray the wizard Gandalf.

If the deal goes through, it will mark Winslet’s first role in the long-running Middle-earth film series.

Winslet Continues Major Film Projects

Winslet was most recently seen in Avatar: Fire and Ash. The movie continues her work with filmmaker James Cameron after she previously appeared in Avatar: The Way of Water.

Joining The Hunt for Gollum would add another major franchise to her career and introduce her to the expansive cinematic world created from Tolkien’s stories.

Reunion With Peter Jackson

The film could also reunite Winslet with director-producer Peter Jackson. Jackson first worked with her in the 1994 drama Heavenly Creatures, which helped establish her early career.

Jackson is producing the new film together with his longtime collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. According to David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, the trio will remain closely involved in developing the project.

Story Set Between Hobbit and Lord of the Rings

The filmmakers have not revealed the official plot yet. However, reports suggest that the story will take place between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

The narrative is expected to focus on the search for Gollum during the time when he possessed important knowledge about the One Ring. This storyline was only briefly mentioned in Tolkien’s original writings, and the new film may expand on it in greater detail.

Release Planned for 2027

The Hunt for Gollum is currently scheduled for release in cinemas on December 17, 2027. The project comes as Warner Bros. continues to invest in the hugely popular The Lord of the Rings film series.

Both the original trilogy and its prequel series The Hobbit film series achieved massive global success. Each trilogy earned roughly $2.8 billion at the worldwide box office.

At the same time, Warner Bros. is going through major corporate changes. The studio is currently in the process of being sold to Paramount Skydance. However, industry experts believe that the importance of the Lord of the Rings franchise means the potential deal is unlikely to affect the production plans for The Hunt for Gollum.
