Iran Hits Key Qatar Energy Site, Sparks Fears of Gas Crisis
Iran struck Qatar’s key LNG hub, escalated the conflict, and raised fears of a global energy crisis.

Iran launched missile strikes on Ras Laffan Industrial City, a vital energy centre. As a result, tensions in the US–Israel–Iran conflict rose sharply. Soon after, QatarEnergy confirmed the attack. The site hosts the world’s largest LNG facilities and the Pearl Gas-to-Liquids plant.

The company said, “In addition to the previous attack on Ras Laffan Industrial City on Wednesday, 18 March 2026, which caused extensive damage to the Pearl GTL facility, QatarEnergy confirms that in the early hours of Thursday, 19 March 2026, several LNG facilities were also targeted.”

Fires erupt and authorities respond quickly

Following the strike, fires broke out across the facility. Emergency teams rushed to the site and controlled the situation. Although the attack caused heavy damage, officials reported no casualties.

Meanwhile, Qatar strongly condemned the strike. It called the attack a violation of international law. It also warned that the incident threatens global energy supply, shipping routes, and the environment.

Iran retaliates after Israeli strikes

Earlier, Israel struck Iran’s energy infrastructure. In response, Iran targeted sites linked to the South Pars Gas Field and Asaluyeh.

At the same time, Israeli attacks killed several senior Iranian officials. Iran confirmed the death of Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib. In addition, strikes killed Ali Larijani and Gholamreza Soleimani earlier this week.

Previously, Iran had warned that it could strike energy facilities across the Gulf. Now, the Ras Laffan attack shows that it has acted on that threat.

Global gas supply faces serious risk

The South Pars field remains the world’s largest natural gas reserve. It supports most of Iran’s gas production. Moreover, it feeds key petrochemical industries.

At the same time, Qatar shares this field, where it is called the North Field. Therefore, any disruption directly impacts both countries and global supply chains.

Trump softens tone but warns Iran

After the attack, US President Donald Trump softened his stance. He distanced the US from Israel’s earlier strike. He also urged restraint. Trump said the US had no prior knowledge of the Israeli action. He stressed that Qatar played no role. He described Iran’s strike as “unjustified and unfair.”

However, he also issued a warning. “No more attacks will be made by Israel on this extremely important facility unless Iran unwisely decides to attack a very innocent country — Qatar,” he said. He added that the US would respond with overwhelming force if Iran strikes again.

Energy crisis fears continue to rise

Qatar supplies a large share of the world’s LNG. Ras Laffan plays a central role in that supply. Therefore, any further escalation could disrupt global gas markets.

Overall, the conflict continues to intensify. If tensions rise further, the world could face a serious energy crisis.
