US authorities are probing a series of unexplained drone sightings above Fort Lesley J. McNair, a sensitive military installation in Washington, DC. The base houses official residences of senior leaders, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Officials, quoted by The Washington Post, said that multiple unidentified drones were seen flying over the base on at least one night in the past 10 days. However, investigators still do not know where these drones came from, which has raised serious concerns.
Security tightened as tensions rise
This incident comes at a sensitive time. The United States military is already on high alert due to ongoing joint operations involving the US and Israel targeting Iran.
A senior administration official said the military is actively monitoring possible threats as the situation continues to evolve. Following the drone sightings, security at Fort McNair was tightened. The issue also reached the White House, where officials discussed possible responses.
At the same time, the US government has expanded its security posture globally. Diplomatic missions worldwide have been placed on alert, and additional protection measures have been introduced at several domestic military bases.
Elevated threat levels at key bases
Security levels were raised at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst and MacDill Air Force Base to “Charlie,” which signals that intelligence indicates a possible threat. Only the highest level, “Delta,” is used when an attack is imminent or already happening.
The seriousness of the drone activity led officials to even consider moving Rubio and Hegseth out of Fort McNair. However, a senior official confirmed that no such relocation has taken place so far.
Responding to the situation, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell refused to share operational details, stating, “The department cannot comment on the secretary’s movements for security reasons, and reporting on such movements is grossly irresponsible.”
The State Department has not released any official statement yet.
Additional security scares deepen concern
Security worries are not limited to Washington. At MacDill Air Force Base—home to US Central Command—operations were halted twice this week due to separate incidents. These included a suspicious package and another unidentified threat.
Meanwhile, US diplomatic missions across the world have been instructed to “immediately” reassess their security arrangements. Officials cited “the ongoing and developing situation in West Asia and the potential for spillover effects.”
Link to past threats under scrutiny
The latest drone sightings have revived fears linked to earlier tensions with Iran, especially after the killing of Qasem Soleimani in 2020. Similar drone-related concerns had also surfaced during election campaigns involving Donald Trump.
Although investigators have not found any direct connection this time, the timing of these sightings—amid escalating regional conflict—has increased suspicion and drawn closer attention from security agencies.
