New Zealand crushed South Africa by eight wickets in the third T20I of the five match series in Auckland. South Africa managed to score 136/9 in 20 overs after being invited to bat first. A dangerous spell by Lockie Ferguson (1/9 in 4 overs) kept the run rate in check, and the South African batsmen struggled throughout the innings. Nqobani Mokoena was the highest scorer for South Africa, while George Linde also contributed a useful 23 runs.
Mitchell Santner (2/21 in 3 overs) was the most successful bowler for New Zealand, while Benjamin Sears and Kyle Jamieson took two wickets each. While chasing, New Zealand cruised past the target with 22 balls to spare. Tom Latham played a superb knock of 63 runs off 55 balls and added 96 runs with Devon Conway for the first wicket, ensuring New Zealand’s victory. Lutho Sipamla and Keshav Maharaj took one wicket each for South Africa. With this win, New Zealand now lead the series 2-1.
South Africa struggle despite batting-friendly pitch
Even though the pitch was expected to favour batters, South Africa failed to take advantage. They managed only 136 for 9, as New Zealand’s bowlers, especially the spinners, kept things tight. Lockie Ferguson delivered a standout performance with the ball. He conceded just 9 runs in his four overs and picked up a wicket. This was the second-most economical spell in a men’s T20I at Eden Park.
Only two South African players crossed the 20-run mark — Nqobani Mokoena and George Linde — as the team struggled with an unsettled batting order.
New Zealand chase comfortably
New Zealand had no trouble chasing the modest target. Devon Conway and Tom Latham built a strong opening partnership of 96 runs in less than 11 overs. This solid start took the game away from South Africa early. Although Gerald Coetzee bowled economically, the visitors could not create enough pressure.
New Zealand reached the target with ease, finishing the match with 22 balls to spare.
Santner leads early collapse
In his final match of the series, Mitchell Santner made a major impact with the ball. After Wiaan Mulder was dismissed for zero, Santner brought himself into the attack early and struck key blows around the powerplay. He removed Connor Esterhuizen, who mistimed a shot and was caught at mid-on. Soon after, Ben Sears dismissed Tony de Zorzi.
Santner then got the wicket of Jason Smith, marking the third time in the series he had dismissed him. Smith has scored only 32 runs across the three matches.
Mokoena provides late resistance
Nineteen-year-old Mokoena impressed with the bat despite coming in late. He walked in at 109 for 8 in the 15th over, with South Africa struggling to even complete their innings. However, he showed confidence by hitting his very first ball for six off Kyle Jamieson. After a quiet phase, Mokoena attacked again. He struck another six off Sears and finished the innings strongly with a four and a six off Jamieson.
His unbeaten 26 turned out to be the highest score for South Africa.
Powerplay sets the tone
South Africa had a poor start, reaching just 41 for 3 in the powerplay and slipping to 46 for 5 soon after. In contrast, New Zealand dominated from the beginning of their chase. They raced to 48 without losing a wicket in the first six overs, effectively sealing the game early.
Lutho Sipamla had a tough outing, conceding 21 runs in a single over. Both Latham and Conway took him apart with a mix of boundaries and sixes.
Latham shines with the bat
Latham, playing his first T20 match in nearly three years before this series, showed his class with a solid half-century. He reached his fifty off 45 balls, using his strength behind square. A large part of his runs — 44 in total — came in that region, including five boundaries and a six.
He is also set to take over the captaincy from Santner for the remaining two matches.
New Zealand continued their strong run by defeating South Africa to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match T20I series. Like the women’s team earlier, the men also secured a comfortable win in what turned out to be a largely one-sided contest. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
