Tech billionaire Elon Musk joined a phone conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump on Tuesday. This marked a rare moment where a private individual participated in a high-level discussion between two global leaders during the ongoing West Asia conflict.
According to Sergio Gor, Modi and Trump focused on the fast-changing situation in the region. Both leaders underlined the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, as tensions continue to rise.
Focus on Gulf Crisis and Strategic Routes
Officials from both India and the United States said the conversation mainly revolved around the worsening crisis in the Gulf region. A key concern was Iran’s military control over the Strait of Hormuz, which is a crucial route for global oil and gas supplies.
Two US officials told The New York Times that Musk also took part in the call. This development indicates that the world’s richest man may have repaired his strained relationship with Trump after their public disagreement last year, which followed Musk’s exit from a government role.
However, it remains unclear why Musk was included in the discussion or whether he actively spoke during the call.
Modi Calls Discussion ‘Productive’
Confirming the conversation, Modi described it as constructive and emphasised the need for peace and stability in the region.
“Received a call from President Trump and had a useful exchange of views on the situation in West Asia. India supports de-escalation and restoration of peace at the earliest,” he said in a post.
He further added, “Ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz remains open, secure and accessible is essential for the whole world,” while noting that both sides agreed to remain in contact regarding ongoing peace efforts.
Musk–Trump Relationship: From Rift to Repair
After Trump’s victory in the 2024 election, Musk was appointed to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The initiative aimed to cut down federal spending and streamline operations. However, this role reportedly created tensions between Musk and senior officials in the administration.
Later, Musk and Trump parted ways following disagreements over the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The legislation focused on major tax reductions, deregulation measures, and stronger border security policies.
Since then, both figures have been working to rebuild their relationship, and Musk’s presence on the recent call suggests improving ties.
