Iran Escalates Conflict with Drone and Missile Attack in Saudi Arabia
An Iranian missile and drone strike on a Saudi air base injured US troops, as tensions rise and the Strait of Hormuz faces new threats.

An Iranian missile hit the Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia on Friday. The attack injured several US service members and damaged key military equipment. Initial reports said around 10 personnel were hurt along with US refueling aircraft. However, The New York Times later  reported that 12 troops suffered injuries.

Missile and Drone Attack Signals Escalation

The strike involved both a missile and unmanned drone, which cited a US official. Therefore, the attack reflects a coordinated military action and marks a fresh escalation in the ongoing conflict.

Rubio Points to Shorter War Timeline

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio provided an update on the situation. He indicated that the conflict may not last long. He said the war could continue for “weeks, not months”. At the same time, he noted that Iran has shown willingness to negotiate on “certain things”.

Iran Closes Strait of Hormuz

Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The group warned that any movement through the waterway would face “harsh measures”, according to state media. This development has raised global concerns because the strait is a critical route for oil and gas shipments.

Rubio also warned that Iran could introduce a toll system for ships if it continues to control the passage.

US Considers Next Military Steps

Despite rising tensions, Rubio said the United States could achieve its objectives without deploying ground troops. However, The Wall Street Journal reported that Donald Trump is considering sending an additional 10,000 troops to the Middle East. These forces could be positioned near Kharg Island, a key centre for Iran’s oil exports.

Conflict Could End Soon

Reinforcing his earlier remarks, Rubio said on Friday that the ongoing military operations against Iran may end within “weeks, not months”. He added that Washington remains confident of achieving its goals without launching a ground invasion.
