Mumbai Indians (MI) edged past Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 6 wickets with 5 balls to spare in the 2nd match of IPL 2026 at Wankhede Stadium. After being invited to bat first, KKR put 220/4 on the scoreboard in 20 overs. Ajinkya Rahane and Finn Allen gave KKR a blazing start, adding 69 runs for the first wicket in 5.2 overs. Ajinkya Rahane played a superb knock of 67 runs off 40 balls. Angkrish Raghuvanshi also scored a blazing half-century. Rinku Singh made 33 runs off 21 balls, which helped KKR cross the 200-run mark. Shardul Thakur (3/39 in 4 overs) was the most impactful bowler for Mumbai Indians.
In reply, Mumbai Indians chased down a massive target of 221 runs in just 19.1 overs. They secured a comfortable six-wicket win against Kolkata Knight Riders. The chase was powered by Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton, who gave the team a flying start. Rohit scored 78 runs off 38 balls, while Rickelton smashed 81 off 43 balls. Together, they built a huge 148-run opening partnership in just 71 balls.
KKR’s Weak Bowling Line-up Gets Exposed
KKR entered the match with a weakened bowling attack. This issue became very clear during the game. Vaibhav Arora and Blessing Muzarabani failed to create any pressure. Varun Chakravarthy looked ineffective, while Sunil Narine did not perform like he used to in the past.
Even though KKR posted a strong total, their bowlers could not defend it.
KKR Post Big Total but Fall Short
At the halfway stage, KKR seemed satisfied with their score of 220 for 4, which was their second-highest total against Mumbai Indians in IPL history.
Ajinkya Rahane, who said at the toss that he had "never seen so much of grass at Wankhede", led the batting effort with 67 runs off 40 balls. Angkrish Raghuvanshi, another Mumbai-based player, added a quick 51 off 29 balls. Their contributions helped KKR cross the 220 mark.
However, against a weakened bowling attack, Mumbai Indians chased the target without much trouble. They completed the highest successful IPL chase at Wankhede with five balls remaining.
Rohit Sharma Turns Back the Clock
Rohit Sharma played a classic innings, reminding everyone of his best days at Wankhede. Initially, he scored 12 runs off 8 balls, but once he settled, he dominated the bowlers.
Before this match, Rohit had a strike rate below 100 against Varun Chakravarthy in T20s. But he changed that quickly. He hit Varun for a lofted shot over covers on the first ball and followed it with a six on the next delivery.
By the end of the powerplay, Rohit had reached his fastest IPL fifty in just 23 balls. Mumbai Indians scored 80 runs in the first six overs and crossed 100 in just 8.1 overs.
When Rohit got out due to a brilliant running catch by Anukul Roy, the required run rate had already dropped below nine, making the chase much easier.
Rickelton Proves His Selection Right
There were questions when Ryan Rickelton was chosen over the experienced Quinton de Kock. However, he quickly silenced all doubts with his performance.
Rickelton took a few overs to adjust to the pitch. After that, he dominated the bowlers. He smashed Vaibhav Arora for two consecutive sixes, one over extra cover and another over deep midwicket.
After the powerplay, he targeted Sunil Narine. He hit a slog sweep for six and followed it with two more sixes in quick succession. He reached his fifty in just 24 balls.
Rickelton continued attacking but was eventually run out by a brilliant direct hit from Anukul Roy.
MI Finish Strong Despite Minor Setbacks
Suryakumar Yadav, who came in as an Impact Substitute, could not make a big impact. However, Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma kept the chase steady.
Hardik remained unbeaten on 18 runs from 11 balls. In the end, Naman Dhir scored the winning runs off Anukul Roy, sealing a memorable victory for Mumbai Indians.
Rahane and Allen Give KKR a Flying Start
Finn Allen carried his excellent international form into the IPL. After struggling initially with five dot balls against Hardik Pandya, he bounced back strongly.
He attacked MI debutant AM Ghazanfar with aggressive shots, including a huge 86-metre six. He added another six in the same over.
Rahane also joined the attack by hitting Hardik for back-to-back sixes. Allen followed with three consecutive boundaries. This resulted in a massive 26-run over, helping KKR reach their fastest fifty against MI in just 3.5 overs.
Thakur and Raghuvanshi Keep KKR Competitive
Shardul Thakur played an important role for Mumbai Indians with the ball. He dismissed Finn Allen and Cameron Green, who could only score briefly. He later removed Rahane with a well-directed delivery.
At that stage, KKR’s scoring rate slowed slightly due to tight bowling from Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, and Thakur.
Meanwhile, Angkrish Raghuvanshi continued to fight. He was on 17 off 14 balls when Rohit dropped his catch at long-on. This gave him a second chance, and he made full use of it.
He hit a four and a six in the 15th over and continued attacking. Raghuvanshi added 60 runs in 30 balls with Rinku Singh. He reached his fifty in just 28 balls.
Rinku Singh remained unbeaten on 33 off 21 balls as KKR finished at 220 for 4. However, their total was not enough to stop Mumbai Indians.
Brief Scorecard
Mumbai Indians had never successfully chased a target above 220 in past seven attempts. They also had not won their opening IPL match since 2012. However, on the second day of IPL 2026, they ended both poor records in style. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
