Keir Starmer Says UK Will Not Join Iran War, Calls for Global Talks
Keir Starmer rules out UK involvement in Iran conflict while hosting global talks to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Wednesday made it clear that Britain will not get involved in the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. At the same time, he announced that the UK will host a major international meeting led by Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper to address the crisis around the Strait of Hormuz.

UK to Host Global Talks on Strait of Hormuz Crisis

Starmer said that leaders from at least 35 countries will take part in the meeting. The main aim is to find ways to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which remains blocked due to rising tensions.

He described the strait as a critical global energy route and stressed the need for urgent action. According to him, the meeting will focus on steps to restore safe navigation and ensure the movement of essential goods.

Leaders to Explore Diplomatic Solutions

Starmer said the participating countries will “assess all viable diplomatic and political measures that we can take to restore freedom of navigation, guarantee the safety of trapped ships and seafarers and resume the movement of vital commodities".

However, he also warned that even if tensions reduce in West Asia, it may not automatically lead to the reopening of the route.

Starmer Reassures Public Amid Rising Energy Concerns

When asked whether people should change their daily habits due to the crisis, Starmer avoided giving a direct answer. The question came after Anthony Albanese advised citizens in Australia to use public transport where possible.

Instead, Starmer focused on reassuring the public. He said the UK is “well placed to weather" the “storm" caused by the conflict, which has already pushed up energy prices.

“It is now clear the impact of this war will affect the future of our country. So today I want to reassure the British people: no matter how fierce this storm, we are well placed to weather it," he said.

UK Looks to Strengthen Ties with Europe and NATO

Starmer also highlighted the importance of stronger cooperation with European allies. He said it is “increasingly clear" that the UK’s long-term national interest depends on closer ties with Europe.

At the same time, he reaffirmed Britain’s commitment to NATO, saying the alliance has ensured security for decades.

“It has kept us safe for many decades, and we are fully committed to NATO," he said. This comes after US President Donald Trump recently described NATO as a “paper tiger" in remarks to the Telegraph.

UK Balances Neutrality and Global Leadership

Overall, Starmer’s remarks highlight a balanced approach. On one hand, the UK is avoiding direct involvement in the conflict. On the other, it is taking a leading diplomatic role to address global trade disruptions and security concerns caused by the crisis.
