Chennai Super Kings (CSK) outclassed Delhi Capitals (DC) by 23 runs in the 18th match of IPL 2026 at Chepauk. Delhi Capitals won the toss and invited CSK to bat first. CSK posted a massive total of 212/2 on the scoreboard in 20 overs. Sanju Samson played a superb knock of 115* off 56 balls, while Ayush Mhatre scored a blazing 59 off 36 balls before being retired out. Samson and Mhatre added 113 runs for the second wicket, which laid a strong foundation for CSK. Axar Patel (1/39 in 4 overs) was the most successful bowler for Delhi Capitals.
While chasing, Pathum Nissanka and KL Rahul gave Delhi Capitals a blazing start, adding 61 runs for the first wicket in just 5 overs. However, after Rahul was dismissed in the fifth over, CSK bowlers took control, and Delhi Capitals slipped to 121/5 in 12.2 overs.
Tristan Stubbs, who played a fighting knock of 60 off 38 balls, tried hard to keep his team in the game, but his efforts fell short in the end. Jamie Overton (4/18 in 4 overs) and Anshul Kamboj (3/35 in 4 overs) dismantled the Delhi Capitals batting lineup. In the end, Delhi Capitals managed 189 runs in 20 overs, falling short by 23 runs.
With this win, CSK opened their account on the points table and also broke their losing streak at Chepauk.
Fast Start Sets the Tone
CSK got off to a flying start, thanks to Samson’s aggressive batting in the powerplay. He scored 45 runs out of the team’s 61 in the first six overs. The crowd of over 32,000 fans at Chepauk cheered loudly when he reached his half-century in just 26 balls.
Their excitement grew even more as Samson continued his attack and brought up his century in 52 balls, with fans chanting his name across the stadium.
Contrast Between Samson and Gaikwad
CSK’s openers had very different performances. Samson attacked from the start, hitting nine fours in the powerplay alone. On the other hand, Ruturaj Gaikwad struggled to score quickly. He managed only one boundary in 17 balls during the powerplay. His slow strike rate continued this season, making it difficult for him to dominate early on.
Gaikwad was eventually dismissed for 15 off 18 balls, as Axar Patel got him out with a well-directed delivery.
Samson Dominates the Bowlers
Samson showed excellent skill against all types of bowling. He handled Lungi Ngidi’s slower balls with ease and punished anything short or wide.
He hit his first six in the 11th over when T Natarajan bowled a full toss. Samson smashed it high over midwicket. Overall, he scored 33 runs off just 13 balls against Natarajan.
He reached his century with an edged boundary in the 18th over. This was his fourth IPL hundred, putting him among the top century-makers in the tournament. Only Virat Kohli, Jos Buttler, Chris Gayle, and KL Rahul have scored more centuries than him.
Samson also got a lucky break when Nissanka dropped a catch when he was on 52.
Middle Overs Boost from Mhatre and Dube
Ayush Mhatre played a quick innings and reached his fifty in 27 balls. However, his scoring slowed down later, and he was retired out after struggling in the final phase.
After that, Samson and Dube ensured CSK crossed the 210 mark with some powerful hitting.
Strong Total Built by CSK
Along with Samson’s innings, Ayush Mhatre added a quick fifty before being retired out. Shivam Dube also contributed with a short but impactful knock. Together, they pushed CSK to a strong total of 212 for 2.
However, this score did not look safe initially, as Delhi Capitals (DC) started their chase in a very aggressive manner.
DC’s Explosive Start
DC openers Pathum Nissanka and KL Rahul attacked from the beginning. They raced to their fifties quickly and crossed the 50-run mark within just four overs.
But CSK made a strong comeback soon after. They picked up three quick wickets in the next three overs, which completely changed the momentum and put DC under pressure.
Early Trouble for CSK Bowlers
CSK introduced Akeal Hosein as an Impact Player due to DC having multiple right-handers at the top. However, he had a poor start, bowling two no-balls in his first over.
DC took advantage of the free hits and scored quickly. Nissanka and Rahul attacked Khaleel Ahmed as well, helping DC reach 61 runs in just five overs.
Turning Point in the Match
Despite a dropped catch earlier, CSK bounced back strongly. Nissanka was eventually dismissed when he chipped a catch to mid-on.
Debutant Gurjapneet Singh made an immediate impact by taking a wicket on his very first ball. He dismissed Axar Patel with a short delivery, and Sarfaraz Khan completed a sharp catch.
Overton then removed Sameer Rizvi and continued to trouble the middle order with his consistent hard-length bowling.
Overton Leads Bowling Attack
Even though Tristan Stubbs tried to keep DC in the game with a fighting 60 off 38 balls, the required run rate kept rising. Eventually, it became too difficult for DC to chase the target.
Jamie Overton delivered an outstanding bowling performance, taking 4 wickets for just 18 runs. He also dismissed Stubbs, which proved to be a key moment in the match.
Final Blow Seals the Match
Stubbs tried to bring DC back into the game with a late counterattack. He scored a half-century and reduced the equation to 32 runs needed from 12 balls. However, Overton ended his resistance by dismissing him with a fast delivery close to 145 kmph.
In the final over, Anshul Kamboj cleaned up the remaining batters, sealing a memorable win for CSK and sending the home crowd into celebration.
Sanju Samson played a brilliant innings to guide Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to their first victory of IPL 2026. His century also helped the team end a long losing streak at home, as they had lost their previous six matches at Chepauk, including games from last season. Ayush Mhatre supported him well. CSK bowlers also did their job effectively. A superb bowling spell by Jamie Overton and Anshul Kamboj helped CSK seal the game. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
