Punjab Kings (PBKS) cruised past Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by six wickets with seven balls to spare in the 17th match of IPL 2026 at New Chandigarh, Mohali. After being invited to bat first, Abhishek Sharma added 120 runs with Travis Head for the first wicket in just 8.1 overs. Shashank Singh dismissed Abhishek Sharma in the same over. Abhishek played a blazing knock of 74 runs off just 28 balls.
Ishan Kishan kept scoring at almost the same pace along with Heinrich Klaasen until the 14th over. With the help of a short cameo from Aniket Verma, Sunrisers Hyderabad posted 219/6 on the scoreboard in 20 overs. Shashank Singh (2/20 in 3 overs) was the most successful bowler for Punjab Kings, while Arshdeep Singh also took two wickets.
While chasing, Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh gave a blazing start to Punjab Kings, adding 99 runs for the first wicket before Arya was dismissed in the seventh over. He scored 57 runs off just 20 balls, while Prabhsimran, who got out in the ninth over, made 51 runs off 25 balls.
Punjab Kings lost a few wickets after the ninth over, but Shreyas Iyer took charge, holding one end and guiding his team across the finishing line with seven balls to spare. Shivang Kumar (3/33 in 4 overs) remained the most successful bowler for Sunrisers Hyderabad, while Harsh Dubey also took one wicket. The winning runs were scored by Shashank Singh, who had already played a key role with the ball earlier in the match. With this win, Punjab Kings continued their winning streak.
Abhishek and Head Set the Stage
SRH’s innings began in explosive fashion. Abhishek Sharma attacked from the very first ball, hitting boundaries across the ground and putting pressure on the bowlers.
He dominated Arshdeep Singh with aggressive stroke play, including pulls, drives, and powerful sixes. Meanwhile, Travis Head initially took time but soon joined the attack, hitting multiple boundaries in quick succession.
Abhishek reached his half-century in just 18 balls, while SRH brought up their 100 in only 35 deliveries. By the end of the powerplay, they had scored 105 without losing a wicket — one of the highest powerplay totals in IPL history.
Momentum Slips After Breakthrough
The turning point came when Shreyas Iyer introduced Shashank Singh into the attack. He immediately slowed down the scoring rate and dismissed Travis Head with a slower ball.
Soon after, Abhishek Sharma also fell for 74 off 28 balls, ending a dominant opening stand. From there, SRH struggled to maintain their earlier momentum. Ishan Kishan played a quick cameo, but was dismissed after a brilliant catch. Heinrich Klaasen failed to accelerate and was eventually out for 39 off 33 balls.
SRH finished with 219 for 6, which turned out to be the lowest total in IPL history after scoring 100 or more runs in the powerplay.
PBKS Respond with Aggressive Start
Chasing a big total, PBKS began aggressively. Priyansh Arya took charge early, scoring boundaries and sixes to keep the required rate in check. Prabhsimran Singh then accelerated the scoring, especially against Jaydev Unadkat, hitting him for three sixes. The duo ensured a strong start, with PBKS scoring heavily in the powerplay.
Arya reached his half-century in just 16 balls, showcasing fearless batting. Although PBKS scored slightly fewer runs than SRH in the powerplay, they remained ahead due to the target being in front of them.
Brief Collapse Raises Hopes for SRH
The match saw a brief twist when PBKS lost quick wickets. Arya was dismissed after a strong start, followed by Prabhsimran, who fell soon after reaching his half-century. The scoring rate slowed down, and PBKS lost three wickets for 29 runs, giving SRH a glimmer of hope.
At that stage, PBKS needed 92 runs from 58 balls with new batters at the crease.
Shreyas Iyer Seals the Win
Captain Shreyas Iyer held his nerve and took control of the chase. After a cautious start, he accelerated with powerful shots, including boundaries and sixes against key bowlers. He attacked Harshal Patel and Eshan Malinga, reducing the required rate significantly. His aggressive yet composed batting ensured that PBKS stayed ahead in the game.
Despite a late wicket, Punjab Kings comfortably chased down the target in the 19th over, ending SRH’s four-match winning streak against them.
