Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) outclassed Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 10 runs in the 27th match of IPL 2026 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
After being asked to bat first, Sunrisers posted 194/9 on the scoreboard. Abhishek Sharma played a blazing knock of 59 runs, while Heinrich Klaasen also scored a fiery 59. Anshul Kamboj (3/22 in 4 overs) was the most successful bowler for CSK, while Jamie Overton also picked up three wickets.
In the chase, CSK fell short by 10 runs. Matt Short was the highest scorer for CSK. Eshan Malinga (3/29 in 4 overs) was the standout bowler for SRH, while Nitish Kumar Reddy also took two wickets. With this win, SRH continued their winning streak.
Abhishek Sharma’s explosive start
Abhishek Sharma gave SRH a flying start. CSK initially tried to contain him by selecting Matt Short for his off-spin, targeting Abhishek and Travis Head.
The plan worked briefly. But when CSK extended the tactic, Abhishek countered brilliantly. He moved across the crease, created room, and attacked freely.
He raced from 26 off 10 balls to a fifty in just 15 deliveries, completely shifting momentum in SRH’s favour.
Overton shines in middle overs
Jamie Overton played a key role in slowing SRH down. He has been one of the most effective bowlers in the middle overs this season. His strategy of hitting the deck worked again. After Abhishek was dropped on 51, Overton bounced back immediately. He bowled a sharp rising delivery that took the edge and led to Abhishek’s dismissal.
Overton’s consistent performances have made him one of the top wicket-takers in this phase of the innings.
Klaasen continues strong form
Heinrich Klaasen once again proved his value, though his approach has slightly changed this season. His strike rate has dropped compared to previous years, but he is now more selective with his shots. This adjustment has helped him score consistently, including three fifties in six innings.
Despite his cautious approach, Klaasen remained aggressive against spin. He attacked Noor Ahmad with innovative shots, including a switch hit, scoring 24 of his 59 runs against him at a high strike rate.
CSK bowlers excel at the death
Anshul Kamboj and Gurjapneet Singh delivered an impressive performance in the death overs. CSK had worked on improving their death bowling, and it showed in this match.
Kamboj executed yorkers accurately, including the dismissal of Klaasen. Gurjapneet mixed his deliveries well, combining yorkers with slower balls.
Together, they conceded just 17 runs in the last three overs, one of the best death-over efforts of the season.
Mhatre injury changes momentum
CSK made a strong start in the chase, scoring 76 for 3 in the powerplay, slightly ahead of SRH’s 75 for 2.
Ayush Mhatre was the standout performer early on. He attacked aggressively, especially against short-pitched bowling, and scored quickly at a strike rate above 220.
However, his innings ended in an unfortunate way. He injured his left leg while running between the wickets. The physio attended him twice, and he had to leave the field soon after.
This moment changed the game’s momentum. Before his injury, CSK were cruising at 62 for 1 in 4.1 overs. After his exit, they struggled to find boundaries and lost wickets regularly.
In the next 8.4 overs, CSK scored only 58 runs and lost four wickets.
Malinga finishes the job
Eshan Malinga returned to close out the match. His pace and accuracy proved difficult to handle. He dismissed Ruturaj Gaikwad with a short ball and used effective yorkers to pick up more wickets. Both Matt Short and Sarfaraz Khan mistimed their shots and were caught in the deep.
Malinga later revealed that he was getting reverse swing, which made his deliveries even more dangerous.
CSK fall short again
Shivam Dube struggled once more in the finisher’s role, and CSK’s chase gradually faded away. Despite dominating the powerplay and remaining favourites at the halfway stage, they failed to finish the game.
This loss also highlighted ongoing issues with CSK’s team strategy, especially decisions made during the mega auction, which continue to affect their performance.
Malinga and support cast seal the game
Eshan Malinga led the charge with figures of 3 for 29. He received excellent support from Nitish Kumar Reddy (2 for 31), Shivang Kumar (1 for 18), and Sakib Hussain (1 for 32).
On paper, these bowlers looked inexperienced. On the field, they performed like a well-oiled unit. Each of them maintained an economy rate of 8 or below and picked up crucial wickets. Shivang dismissed Dewald Brevis for a duck. Sakib delivered a major blow by clean bowling Shivam Dube, which effectively ended CSK’s hopes.
Their combined effort turned out to be more decisive than the aggressive half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma and Heinrich Klaasen earlier in the innings.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) pulled off a remarkable win with a disciplined bowling effort from four relatively unknown players. In a season dominated by high scores, this match turned the script, as bowlers dictated terms.
At one stage, it looked like the first-innings total could go beyond 230. However, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) bowlers Jamie Overton, Anshul Kamboj, and Gurjapneet Singh pulled things back and restricted SRH to 193.
CSK had a strong chance during the chase. They needed 84 runs from 60 balls with seven wickets in hand. The situation was well within reach, and it looked like they would complete their first successful 190-plus chase in eight years. But SRH’s bowling unit had other plans.
