During the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner, attended by Donald Trump, Melania Trump, and JD Vance, a man allegedly rushed toward a security checkpoint near the main ballroom and opened fire.
Authorities identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31. Officials said he was carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives at the time. Soon after, Secret Service agents and other law enforcement officers returned fire. During the exchange, one officer was struck in a bulletproof vest. However, no guests inside the ballroom were injured.
Security teams quickly subdued Allen and took him into custody without shooting him. Early findings suggest he acted alone as a “lone actor,” according to statements from the FBI and local police. Later, Trump described the suspect as a “sick person” and shared images of him on Truth Social.
Background of the Accused
Authorities confirmed that Allen is a resident of Torrance, California. Law enforcement agencies identified him as the main suspect in the shooting at the Washington Hilton hotel in Washington, D.C.
Unverified online profiles describe him as an engineer and computer scientist. He reportedly studied at California Institute of Technology, where he was part of the “Blitzkrieg Bots” robotics team that won a robotic vehicle design competition in 2016.
He also participated in a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which led some reports to label him a “NASA fellow.”
Academically, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Caltech and later completed a Master’s degree in Computer Science from California State University Dominguez Hills.
Professional Career and Activities
Professionally, Allen worked as a mechanical engineer at IJK Controls. At the same time, he served as a teaching assistant at Caltech. He also worked part-time as a teacher with C2 Education in the Los Angeles area. Reports suggest he once received recognition as “Teacher of the Month” in Los Angeles County.
In addition, he worked independently as a game developer and created titles such as “Bohrdom” and “First Law.” Some unverified reports claim he donated to Kamala Harris’s 2024 campaign. However, officials have not confirmed this information.
What Was the Motive?
Officials have not yet confirmed the motive behind the attack. However, reports suggest that Allen told investigators he wanted to target Trump administration officials after his arrest.
Charges and Ongoing Investigation
Jeanine Pirro, the US Attorney for the District of Columbia, announced initial charges against Allen. These include two counts of using a firearm during a violent crime and assaulting a federal officer with a dangerous weapon.
Authorities are expected to add more firearm-related charges.
Meanwhile, the FBI continues its investigation. Officials are reviewing Allen’s background, possible motives, electronic devices, and any connections. They also plan to search his residence in California.
At present, investigators have not confirmed a clear motive. The case remains active, and more details are expected as the investigation progresses.
