Trump Slams NATO Over Lack of Support in Iran Conflict
US President Donald Trump criticised NATO for lacking support and claimed the US holds a strong advantage in the Iran conflict amid rising tensions with allies.

US President Donald Trump said he feels “very disappointed” with NATO. He accused the alliance of not supporting the United States. He made these remarks on Sunday. His comments came just hours after he faced a major security threat at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Trump Questions NATO’s Support

Trump spoke to Fox News in an interview. He stressed that the US has spent huge amounts of money to support NATO.

“I am very, very disappointed in NATO because they weren’t there. You know, we spend trillions of dollars on NATO in order to protect Europe from Russia–and we’ve always been there… They can’t do it without us,” he told Fox News on Sunday.

He suggested that NATO allies failed to stand with the US when needed.

Frustration Over Allies’ Response

The Trump administration has shown frustration with Western allies. Officials believe these countries have not supported the US during the war in Iran. They also see weak backing for some of Trump’s major policy decisions.

During the same interview, Trump shifted his focus to Iran. He spoke about the ongoing conflict and the current situation.

Trump Claims US Holds Advantage in Iran War

Trump said the US has a strong position in the conflict with Iran. He pointed to military actions and blockades as key reasons.

“I think the big advantage is that we’ve taken out their navy in its entirety. We’ve taken out of their air force… they’re really in bad shape. And, of course, we’ve done the blockade, and the blockade’s been unbelievably effective,” he said.

He claimed these actions have weakened Iran significantly.

Growing Tensions Between US and NATO

Relations between the US and NATO have become strained. Since returning to power, Trump has pushed NATO countries to increase their defence spending.

However, tensions grew when several NATO nations refused to support the US in the Iran war. Some countries also declined to allow the US to use their military bases.

Pentagon Email Raises Concerns

A recent development added to the tension. The United States Department of Defense sent an internal email outlining possible actions against NATO allies. The email suggested that the US could take steps against countries that did not support its position on Iran. One proposal included suspending Spain from NATO.

Officials said the message aimed to send a strong signal to European allies. It criticised what it described as a “sense of entitlement on the part of the Europeans”.

Impact of Proposed Measures

Experts believe that removing Spain from NATO would have limited military impact on the US. However, such a move would carry strong symbolic meaning.

It would highlight the growing divide between the US and its European partners.
