Gujarat Titans crushed Sunrisers Hyderabad by 82 runs in the 56th match of IPL 2026 at Narendra Modi Stadium. After being invited to bat first, Gujarat Titans posted 168/5 on the scoreboard in 20 overs. Praful Hinge (2/17 in 3 overs) gave early blows to Gujarat Titans. After losing two quick wickets, Sai Sudharsan and Nishant Sindhu added 48 runs for the third wicket. When Pat Cummins dismissed Nishant Sindhu in the 10th over, Gujarat Titans were struggling at 64/3.
From that point, Washington Sundar took charge of the innings. He first added 60 runs for the fourth wicket with Sai Sudharsan before Sudharsan was dismissed by Sakib Hussain in the 17th over. Sudharsan scored 61 runs off 44 balls. Sundar then stitched another 40-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Jason Holder before getting dismissed on the second-last ball of the innings. Washington Sundar played a superb knock of 50 runs off just 33 balls.
While chasing, Kagiso Rabada (3/28 in 4 overs) and Mohammed Siraj (1/11 in 3 overs) gave early blows to Sunrisers Hyderabad. As a result, SRH struggled at 32/4 after the powerplay. Heinrich Klaasen and Salil Arora showed some resistance and added 24 runs for the fifth wicket. However, Jason Holder (3/20 in 4 overs) and Prasidh Krishna (2/23 in 3 overs) wrapped up the innings along with Rashid Khan (1/3 in 0.5 overs). Sunrisers Hyderabad were bowled out for just 86 runs in 14.5 overs. Pat Cummins remained the top scorer for SRH.
With this win, Gujarat Titans moved to the top of the points table with 16 points, while Sunrisers Hyderabad remained in third position.
Gill-Sudharsan Opening Pair Powers GT
The opening partnership of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan has once again become the backbone of Gujarat Titans. Captain Gill has anchored the batting lineup brilliantly. He has scored 467 runs this season, including four half-centuries.
Sudharsan has provided explosive support at the top. He currently has 501 runs and remains in the Orange Cap race alongside Gill. While other IPL teams have gained attention for aggressive batting, GT’s success has largely come from long and consistent opening stands.
Gill and Sudharsan have already added 535 runs together in 11 innings this season. Only Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma have scored more runs as an opening pair with 627 runs in 12 innings. The duo rarely throws away wickets in the powerplay. Instead, they steadily build innings and lay strong foundations for the middle order.
Last season, Gill and Sudharsan scored 912 partnership runs in 15 innings, the highest by any pair in IPL 2025. Sudharsan also finished that season as the Orange Cap holder. Once again, the pair has carried Gujarat’s batting lineup throughout the season.
Jason Holder Changes Gujarat’s Season
Jason Holder has emerged as one of Gujarat Titans’ biggest game changers this season. GT bought Holder for Rs 7 crore during the IPL 2026 mega auction. However, the franchise initially kept him on the bench. The team later replaced Glenn Phillips with Holder, and the move completely changed Gujarat’s campaign.
Since Holder entered the playing XI, GT has won five out of six matches. Although his batting contributions remain limited, Holder has dominated with the ball.
In six matches, he has taken 13 wickets at an economy rate of 6.35. Among bowlers who have delivered at least 20 overs this season, Holder currently has the best economy rate. He averages just 10.92 with the ball. Against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Holder destroyed the lower middle order and picked up 3 wickets for 20 runs.
Against Punjab Kings, he produced his best spell of the season with figures of 4/24. Holder has also contributed in the field with sharp catches and calm finishing knocks.
Standing at 6’7”, Holder has used his height effectively to generate extra bounce. He has formed a dangerous pace combination alongside Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj.
Gujarat Bowlers Dominate IPL 2026
While most bowlers have struggled on batting-friendly pitches this season, Gujarat Titans’ bowling attack has stood out. After a slow start, GT bowlers bounced back strongly, especially during the powerplay overs.
The five-man frontline bowling attack has already taken 95 wickets in 12 league matches. The bowling unit has consistently restricted teams below 200 runs in most matches. GT currently leads the IPL 2026 powerplay wicket charts with 25 wickets. RCB follows with 22 wickets, while SRH has 21 wickets. The team has successfully used an aggressive strategy with Siraj and Rabada attacking in the powerplay.
Rabada currently leads the Purple Cap race with 21 wickets. He has destroyed opposition top orders and claimed 16 wickets in the first six overs alone. Siraj has supported him brilliantly with 13 wickets and several early breakthroughs. He has also bowled four first-over wicket maidens this season, the most in the tournament.
Rashid Khan initially struggled with his economy rate. However, he regained form and now leads Gujarat’s spin department with 16 wickets. He has regularly broken partnerships during the middle overs. Holder has also become a vital tactical weapon for the team by delivering wickets in both middle and death overs.
Meanwhile, Prasidh Krishna has taken 14 wickets in just eight matches and maintained pressure with disciplined bowling.
Middle Order Still Remains a Concern
Despite leading the points table, Gujarat Titans still face problems in the middle order. Batters from positions four to seven have struggled to maintain momentum consistently. Washington Sundar, Rahul Tewatia, Glenn Phillips and Shah Rukh Khan initially formed the middle order.
Later, GT replaced Phillips with Holder. The team also brought in Nishant Sindhu for the last two matches instead of Shah Rukh Khan, who managed only 35 runs this season. Washington Sundar also struggled initially but recently returned to form.
He scored a crucial fifty against Sunrisers Hyderabad after early wickets of Gill and Jos Buttler. He then built an important partnership with Sudharsan to guide GT to 168.
