SC Freiburg stand just one match away from winning the first major trophy in the club’s history as they prepare to face Aston Villa in Wednesday’s UEFA Europa League Final.
The German side finished their Bundesliga season strongly and secured qualification for the Europa Conference League after a convincing win against third-placed RB Leipzig.
However, winning the Europa League would give Freiburg direct entry into the UEFA Champions League and mark the club’s first-ever appearance in Europe’s top competition.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa already confirmed their return to the Champions League after a dominant victory over defending Premier League champions Liverpool FC last Friday.
Emery Targets Fifth Europa League Title
Villa manager Unai Emery has built a remarkable reputation in the Europa League. His side reached the final after defeating fellow English club Nottingham Forest in the semi-finals with an impressive performance at Villa Park.
Emery previously won the competition four times. He lifted three consecutive Europa League trophies with Sevilla FC during the mid-2010s before winning it again with Villarreal CF in the 2020/21 season. Despite his success at Villa, the Spaniard is still waiting to deliver silverware to the club.
Villa returned to the Premier League in 2021 but struggled during their first few seasons back in the top division. When Emery replaced Steven Gerrard during the 2022/23 campaign, the team had won only two of their first 11 league games.
Since then, Villa have consistently qualified for European competitions under Emery’s leadership. The club, which famously won the European Cup in 1982, has lost every major domestic cup final it has played in during the 21st century.
Freiburg Continue Fairytale European Journey
Freiburg also hope to end years of heartbreak by winning their first major title. The club came close during the 2021/22 DFB-Pokal final but lost to RB Leipzig in a penalty shootout. Since then, Freiburg have reached the semi-finals of the German Cup twice more. Last month, they suffered another painful defeat against VfB Stuttgart after conceding a goal in the 119th minute.
This season, however, Freiburg have enjoyed a historic European campaign. The team defeated Celta Vigo in both legs and also eliminated KRC Genk and SC Braga with strong home performances. Their impressive run at the Europa-Park Stadion helped them equal Sevilla’s record for consecutive Europa League home wins.
Freiburg Seek Better Result Against English Opposition
Freiburg’s only previous meetings against English opposition came against West Ham United during the 2023/24 season. The two sides faced each other in the group stage and later met again in the Round of 16. West Ham comfortably won the knockout tie 5-1 on aggregate.
Match Officials and European History
French referee Francois Letexier will officiate the Europa League final. Meanwhile, German referee Daniel Siebert has been selected for the Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal FC.
Letexier previously refereed Spain national football team’s victory over England national football team in the last European Championship final. Aston Villa’s most famous European triumph came in 1982 when they defeated FC Bayern Munich in the European Cup final in Rotterdam thanks to a goal from Peter Withe.
Villa also beat Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig during last season’s Champions League league phase.
Team News
Freiburg will miss Yuito Suzuki, who played a major role during their Europa League campaign before suffering a broken collarbone. For Villa, long-term absentee Boubacar Kamara remains unavailable. Midfielder Amadou Onana is also doubtful after missing recent matches.
Several Villa players have previous Bundesliga experience, including Jadon Sancho, Ian Maatsen, Emi Buendía and Leon Bailey.
