Gujarat Titans (GT) crushed Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 89 runs in the 66th match of IPL 2026 at Narendra Modi Stadium. CSK won the toss and decided to bowl first. With the help of superb half-centuries from B Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler, Gujarat Titans posted a huge total of 229/4 in 20 overs.
Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan gave Gujarat Titans a flying start and added 125 runs for the first wicket. When Gill was dismissed by Spencer Johnson in the 13th over, Jos Buttler came in to bat at No. 3. He added a blazing 82 runs in the next 36 balls with Sai Sudharsan. Sai Sudharsan scored 84 runs off 53 balls, while Jos Buttler remained unbeaten on 57 runs off just 27 balls. Mukesh Choudhary (1/36 in 4 overs) was the most successful bowler for CSK, while Spencer Johnson and Anshul Kamboj took one wicket each.
In reply, CSK lost half of their side within seven overs. Mohammed Siraj (3/26 in 3 overs) and Kagiso Rabada (3/32 in 3.4 overs) demolished the CSK top order. As a result, CSK were struggling at 63/5 after seven overs. Shivam Dube tried to revive the innings with Dewald Brevis, and the duo added 53 runs for the sixth wicket.
However, Shivam Dube’s efforts went in vain as Rashid Khan (3/18 in 2 overs) wrapped up the innings quickly. CSK were bowled out for 140 with 38 balls to spare. With this convincing victory, Gujarat Titans secured a top-two finish and strengthened their chances of reaching the IPL final. Meanwhile, Chennai Super Kings officially crashed out of the playoff race after another disappointing performance.
Gill gives GT a flying start
After being asked to bat first on a red-soil pitch that offered pace and bounce, GT attacked aggressively from the beginning. Shubman Gill smashed a rapid half-century off just 23 balls and laid the platform for a huge total. He played attacking shots all around the ground and kept the scoreboard moving quickly.
Gill eventually scored 64 runs before getting dismissed, but by then he had already put CSK under pressure.
Sai Sudharsan continues brilliant form
B Sai Sudharsan played another outstanding innings and anchored Gujarat Titans’ batting effort. He scored 84 runs off 53 balls and registered his fifth consecutive IPL half-century. During the knock, he also reclaimed the Orange Cap.
Sai Sudharsan and Gill shared their seventh century partnership in the IPL, the most by an opening pair in tournament history. The left-hander initially played cautiously while Gill attacked, but later accelerated brilliantly and punished the CSK bowlers.
Buttler provides explosive finish
Jos Buttler added the finishing touches with a destructive unbeaten knock of 57 off just 27 balls. He attacked the bowlers immediately after arriving at the crease and especially targeted Noor Ahmad with massive sixes.
Buttler reached his fifty in only 23 deliveries and helped GT cross the 220-run mark comfortably.
Gurjapneet impresses despite pressure
Amid the heavy scoring, Gurjapneet Singh stood out for CSK with a disciplined spell. The left-arm pacer mixed cutters and wide yorkers effectively and finished with figures of 0/31 in four overs.
However, the rest of the CSK bowling attack struggled badly. Anshul Kamboj conceded 56 runs in four overs and also recorded the unwanted record for conceding the most sixes in a single IPL season.
Samson suffers injury setback
CSK suffered an early setback when Sanju Samson injured his finger while wicketkeeping. A hard-length delivery from Spencer Johnson suddenly moved sharply after passing the batter and hit Samson awkwardly.
He immediately walked off the field and did not return during GT’s innings. Kartik Sharma took over wicketkeeping duties. Samson later came out to bat but survived only one ball before edging a delivery from Mohammed Siraj.
Siraj destroys CSK’s top order
Siraj produced a devastating spell with the new ball and shattered CSK’s batting lineup. After dismissing Samson, he removed Ruturaj Gaikwad with a delivery that came back sharply and crashed into the stumps.
On the very next ball, Siraj dismissed local youngster Urvil Patel, who top-edged a flick shot straight to the fielder. CSK’s top five batters were dismissed inside seven overs as the chase collapsed rapidly.
Shivam Dube briefly fights back
At 72/5, Shivam Dube launched a counterattack that briefly raised hopes for CSK. He smashed 47 runs off only 17 balls and attacked both pace and spin aggressively.
Dube hammered Arshad Khan for multiple boundaries and later took on Jason Holder with powerful hitting. However, his innings ended when Rashid Khan dismissed him after Gill completed a stunning running catch.
Rashid finishes off CSK
Rashid Khan then wrapped up the lower order quickly. He finished with excellent figures of 3/18 as CSK were bowled out in just 14 overs. GT’s bowlers maintained pressure throughout the innings and never allowed CSK to recover from the early collapse.
