Historic Sprint Double: Gurindervir and Vishal TK Rewrite Indian Athletics Records
Indian athletics witnessed a historic sprinting breakthrough as Gurindervir Singh became the first Indian to run sub-10.1 in the 100m while Vishal TK broke the 45-second barrier in the 400m, with both setting new national records.

Indian sprinting witnessed a record-breaking 24 hours as two athletes repeatedly broke the national men’s 100m record three times between them. The highlight came when Gurindervir Singh became the first Indian ever to run under 10.1 seconds in the 100m.

At the Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium, Gurindervir stopped the clock at a stunning 10.09 seconds, setting a new national record and creating history in Indian athletics.

Kujur and Gurindervir Trade National Records

Animesh Kujur of Odisha entered the National Senior Federation Competition as the top contender in the 100m event. He had earlier set the national record at 10.18 seconds last year.

However, the competition turned into a fierce battle of records.

On Friday, Gurindervir Singh first broke the record in the semifinal heat with a timing of 10.17 seconds. Minutes later, Kujur responded in the next semifinal and reclaimed the record with an even faster 10.15 seconds.

The rivalry set the stage for a dramatic final.

Gurindervir’s Record-Breaking Finish

On Saturday, Gurindervir, representing Punjab and competing for Reliance Foundation, delivered his best performance. He ran the 100m in 10.09 seconds, winning the race and setting a new national record.

Animesh Kujur finished second, just 0.11 seconds behind him. Pranav Gurav of Reliance Foundation took third place with a timing of 10.29 seconds.

With this performance, Gurindervir also crossed the qualifying mark of 10.16 seconds set by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

His 10.09-second run also ranked as the second-fastest time by an Asian athlete this season, behind Japanese sprinter Fukuto Komuro, who clocked 10.08 seconds.

Vishal TK Breaks 400m Barrier

The excitement continued in the 400m event, where another national record fell within half an hour. Vishal TK of Tamil Nadu created history by becoming the first Indian sprinter to run the 400m in under 45 seconds.

Vishal had already gained attention last year after setting a national record of 45.12 seconds in Chennai. This time, he went even further and clocked 44.98 seconds, breaking the 45-second barrier.

Strong Competition in 400m Final

Vishal’s performance also helped him surpass the 2026 Commonwealth Games qualifying mark of 44.96 seconds set by the AFI. His timing of 44.98 seconds now leads the Asian season list, ahead of Ammar Ismail Ibrahim, who recorded 45.16 seconds in April.

Rajesh Ramesh of Tamil Nadu finished second with 45.31 seconds, while Jay Kumar of Uttar Pradesh secured third place with 45.47 seconds.
