Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed deep sorrow over the deadly coal mine explosion in China’s Shanxi province that killed at least 90 people. He called the tragedy “deeply saddening” and extended condolences to Chinese President Xi Jinping and the people of China.
In a post on X, PM Modi said he felt deeply saddened by the loss of lives in one of China’s worst mining disasters in recent years. He also expressed support for the families of the victims and hoped rescue teams would safely find those still missing.
“Upon learning of the mining accident in Shanxi Province, China, which has resulted in loss of life, I am deeply saddened. On behalf of the people of India, I extend profound condolences and sincere sympathy to President Xi Jinping and the Chinese people. May the families of those who have perished find strength to endure this difficult time. I sincerely pray that those still missing will be found safe and sound at the earliest,” the Prime Minister said in a post on X.

247 Workers Were Inside Mine During Blast
According to Reuters, citing Chinese state media, the gas explosion took place late Friday at the Liushenyu coal mine in Qinyuan county of Shanxi province in northern China.
Reports said around 247 workers were underground when the blast occurred. Authorities confirmed at least 90 deaths so far. The incident has become China’s deadliest mining disaster in more than a decade.
Meanwhile, rescue teams continued search operations to locate workers who remained missing after the explosion.
Xi Jinping Orders Rescue and Investigation
After the incident, Chinese President Xi Jinping directed officials to make every effort to rescue survivors and provide treatment to injured workers.
He also ordered a detailed investigation into the cause of the explosion. Additionally, Xi asked authorities to ensure accountability against those responsible for the disaster.
Liushenyu Coal Mine Operated by Shanxi Tongzhou Group
Shanxi Tongzhou Group Liushenyu Coal Industry operates the Liushenyu coal mine. The company was established in 2010 and is controlled by Shanxi Tongzhou Coal Coking Group, according to corporate database Qichacha.
However, officials have not yet revealed the exact cause of the gas explosion. Authorities also have not shared details about the number of injured workers.
