South Korea Plans First Nuclear-Powered Submarine By Mid-2030s
South Korea will develop its first nuclear-powered submarine by the mid-2030s to counter North Korea’s threats while working with the United States and the International Atomic Energy Agency to ensure non-proliferation compliance.

South Korea will develop and launch its first nuclear-powered submarine by the mid-2030s. The move is aimed at strengthening its defence capability against North Korea’s submarine-launched nuclear and missile threats, Defence Minister Ahn Gyu-back said on Tuesday. He said the project will use low-enriched uranium as fuel and will be designed and built entirely within South Korea.

Domestic Defence And Industrial Push

Ahn explained that the programme will bring together South Korea’s nuclear technology, shipbuilding capacity and defence industry expertise. At the same time, he stressed that the country will continue to uphold its commitment not to develop or acquire nuclear weapons.

Cooperation With United States And IAEA

The Defence Minister said South Korea will work closely with the United States to secure low-enriched uranium fuel for the submarines. He added that the country will also coordinate with the International Atomic Energy Agency to ensure full compliance with global non-proliferation rules.

First Submarine Expected In Mid-2030s

The government has set a target to launch the first nuclear-powered submarine in the mid-2030s. Officials believe nuclear propulsion will significantly upgrade South Korea’s naval strength.

Greater Underwater Capability

The new submarines will be able to remain submerged for much longer periods compared to current conventional models. They will also offer improved mobility and operational range, strengthening South Korea’s maritime defence posture against regional threats.
