Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur praised young cricket star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, saying he could have imagined casting the teenage sensation in his upcoming film Masoom: The New Generation if cricket had not already made him a star.

Acclaimed filmmaker Shekhar Kapur has expressed admiration for teenage cricket sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, drawing an unexpected connection between the young batter and the world of cinema. The veteran director recently suggested that if Vaibhav had not become one of India's most exciting cricket talents, he could have easily fit into the cast of his upcoming film project.

Shekhar Kapur's Remark Goes Viral

Shekhar Kapur shared his thoughts on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, where he posted a photograph of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and praised the youngster's presence.

“If Sooryavanshi wasn’t such a sensational cricketer.. I could have cast him in Masoom the film." The comment quickly gained attention online, with fans from both the cricket and film industries reacting to the filmmaker's observation.

Why Vaibhav Caught Shekhar Kapur's Attention

Kapur appeared impressed by Vaibhav's youthful charm, innocence, and natural personality. The filmmaker hinted that the young cricketer possesses qualities that would have suited the emotional storytelling style of Masoom.

Over the last two IPL seasons, Vaibhav has emerged as one of the most talked-about young athletes in the country. His confidence, maturity, and popularity have made him a familiar face beyond the cricket field.

Masoom Returns With A New Story

Shekhar Kapur is currently working on Masoom: The New Generation, a modern reimagining of his critically acclaimed 1983 film Masoom.

The upcoming film is expected to explore themes such as family relationships, identity, migration, and love through a contemporary perspective while preserving the emotional depth that made the original film memorable.

According to reports, the project features an impressive cast that includes Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Manoj Bajpayee, Nithya Menen, and Kaveri Kapur. The film is presently in the pre-production stage and is expected to go on floors later this year.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Rise In Indian Cricket

While Kapur may have seen a potential actor in him, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has already established himself as one of the brightest young stars in Indian cricket.

The left-handed batter from Bihar burst onto the national stage while representing Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. His fearless approach and explosive stroke play quickly turned him into a fan favourite.

Vaibhav made headlines during IPL 2025 when he became the youngest player ever to score a century in the tournament's history.

Record-Breaking IPL 2025 Campaign

One of the most memorable moments of IPL 2025 came when Vaibhav hammered 101 runs from just 38 deliveries against Gujarat Titans.

He reached his century in only 35 balls, registering the fastest IPL hundred by an Indian batter and the second-fastest century overall in the league's history.

The young batter also recorded the fastest half-century of the season, reaching the landmark in only 17 balls.

During his debut IPL campaign, he scored 252 runs in seven innings at a strike rate exceeding 200. His remarkable season included one century and one fifty, immediately establishing him as one of the tournament's most exciting talents.

Dominant Performance In IPL 2026

Vaibhav carried his incredible form into IPL 2026 and elevated his game even further.

Representing Rajasthan Royals, he finished among the leading run-scorers of the season with an outstanding tally of 776 runs. He maintained a strike rate of more than 237 and consistently dominated opposition bowling attacks throughout the tournament.

His season featured one century, several half-centuries, and a remarkable record of 72 sixes.

Knock After Knock Breaks Records

Among his standout innings was a blistering 103 off just 37 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad. He also produced a stunning 97-run knock from only 29 deliveries in the Eliminator.

Vaibhav continued to rewrite records with his aggressive batting style, including two separate half-centuries that came in only 15 balls each.

His ability to attack from the very first over made him one of the most dangerous powerplay batters in the competition.

Key Figure For Rajasthan Royals

Throughout IPL 2026, Vaibhav played a crucial role in Rajasthan Royals' journey to the playoffs. His consistency and fearless approach made him one of the defining players of the season.

Although Rajasthan Royals eventually fell short of winning the title and were knocked out of the tournament, Vaibhav's performances further strengthened his reputation as one of Indian cricket's most exciting young prospects.

At just a young age, he has already attracted attention from sporting legends, fans, and now even celebrated filmmakers, highlighting the growing impact he continues to make both on and off the cricket field.
