FIFA World Cup 2026: Germany Start Campaign in Style With 7-1 Rout of Curaçao
Germany began their World Cup campaign with a dominant 7-1 win over debutants Curaçao, who made history by scoring their first-ever World Cup goal.

Germany opened their FIFA World Cup campaign in emphatic fashion with a 7-1 victory over debutants Curaçao on Sunday. However, the scoreline did not tell the full story. The Caribbean nation produced a memorable performance in their first-ever World Cup match and made history by scoring their maiden goal on football’s biggest stage.

For 37 minutes, Curaçao matched the four-time world champions and even raised hopes of a major upset before Germany’s superior quality eventually took control.

Curaçao Make History in First World Cup Appearance

Curaçao entered the tournament as the smallest nation ever to compete in a FIFA World Cup. Despite facing one of the tournament's giants, they showed confidence and determination from the start. Germany struck first in the sixth minute when Felix Nmecha found the net to give his side an early advantage.

But Curaçao responded brilliantly. In the 21st minute, Livano Comenencia wrote his name into the history books. The midfielder fired a left-footed shot through a crowded penalty area and beat the German goalkeeper to level the score at 1-1. The goal became Curaçao’s first ever at a FIFA World Cup and sparked celebrations among players and supporters alike.

The underdogs continued to frustrate Germany and remained level for 17 minutes after the equaliser, showing remarkable discipline and energy. After the match, Curaçao winger Jearl Margaritha reflected on the historic moment.

"Even though it wasn't me, it felt like it was me, it was all of us, the whole island, everybody," Margaritha said.

"We screamed our lungs out. So we were happy."

Germany Take Control Before Half-Time

Germany eventually found a way through Curaçao’s stubborn defence. In the 38th minute, defender Nico Schlotterbeck headed home from a corner delivered by Nathaniel Brown to restore Germany’s lead. The goal ended Curaçao’s impressive resistance and shifted momentum firmly in Germany’s favour.

Just before the break, Felix Nmecha won a penalty after a challenge inside the box. Kai Havertz stepped up and calmly converted the spot-kick in stoppage time. Germany entered halftime with a comfortable 3-1 lead.

Havertz and Musiala Lead Second-Half Dominance

Germany wasted little time extending their advantage after the restart. Just two minutes into the second half, Jamal Musiala scored to make it 4-1 and effectively end any hopes of a Curaçao comeback. Nathaniel Brown then capped an impressive performance by scoring Germany’s fifth goal in the 68th minute.

The goals kept coming as Deniz Undav added another in the 78th minute. Kai Havertz completed his brace in the 88th minute, sealing a dominant 7-1 victory and giving Germany an ideal start to the tournament.

Nagelsmann Pleased With Confidence-Boosting Win

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann welcomed the convincing victory and said his team needed such a result. "We really needed this convincing win," Nagelsmann said.

"We needed this self-confidence. It was there but it definitely grew."

The German coach admitted that matches against underdogs can be difficult because expectations often create additional pressure. "One team has very high expectations and the other one doesn't and that's a bit tricky," he said.

Germany Begin Redemption Mission Strongly

Germany arrived at the World Cup looking to rebuild their reputation after disappointing group-stage exits in both Russia and Qatar. The emphatic victory offered a positive start and boosted confidence ahead of tougher tests later in the tournament.

"We have to show the fans that we can perform and we have to have the confidence," Nagelsmann said. "We're in a better spot than we were entering this match."

Neuer Returns as Germany Look Ahead

Veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer made his return to international football after nearly two years away. He had a relatively quiet evening and made just one save in front of a crowd of 68,021 fans at NRG Stadium. Germany will next face Ivory Coast in Toronto as they continue their World Cup campaign.

Meanwhile, Curaçao will look to build on their historic debut when they take on Ecuador in Kansas City. Despite the heavy defeat, Curaçao left the field with a moment that will forever remain part of the nation’s football history—their first goal at a FIFA World Cup.
