Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Bratislava on Monday for a State Visit, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Slovakia since the country gained independence in 1993. The landmark visit is expected to strengthen bilateral ties and open new opportunities for cooperation between the two nations in several key sectors.
Traditional Slovak Welcome for PM Modi
Upon his arrival in Bratislava, Prime Minister Modi was welcomed by Juraj Blanár, Slovakia’s Minister of Foreign and European Affairs. As part of the ceremonial reception, Modi was greeted with the traditional Slovak offering of bread and salt, a symbolic gesture that represents respect, friendship and hospitality in Slovak culture.
The welcome ceremony also featured a vibrant cultural performance by the Kopaniciarik children's folk ensemble from the Myjava region. Dressed in colorful traditional Slovak costumes, the young performers presented a lively folk dance in honor of the visiting Indian leader.

Indian Community Turns Out in Large Numbers
The warm reception continued after Modi arrived at his hotel in Bratislava. Hundreds of members of the Indian diaspora gathered outside the venue carrying Indian flags and chanting "Modi, Modi." The enthusiastic crowd gave the Prime Minister a heartfelt welcome during his first visit to the country.
Significance of the Bread-and-Salt Tradition
The bread-and-salt ceremony holds deep cultural importance across Slovakia and many other Slavic nations. Traditionally, presenting guests with freshly baked bread and salt is considered the highest expression of hospitality and goodwill. Bread symbolizes prosperity, nourishment and the sharing of life's blessings, while salt represents enduring friendship, protection and lasting value.
The gesture is reserved for honored guests and reflects the host nation's respect for the visitor.
‘Vande Mataram’ Resonates in Bratislava
The visit also featured several cultural exchanges highlighting the growing friendship between India and Slovakia. The renowned Slovak cultural group, the Lúčnica Ensemble, performed a touching rendition of India's national song, “Vande Mataram." Modi also attended a spiritual performance by the Slovak musical group Mahadeva Kirtan Projekt, showcasing cultural and spiritual connections between the two countries.
Soon after arriving, the Prime Minister shared a message on social media about the significance of the visit. “Reached Bratislava. This visit provides an opportunity to deepen India-Slovakia relations and explore new avenues of cooperation. Looking forward to productive meetings with President Pellegrini and Prime Minister Fico,” PM Modi posted on X shortly after his arrival.

Focus on Expanding Bilateral Cooperation
The Slovakia visit is the second stop of Modi's ongoing European tour. He arrived in Bratislava after holding bilateral talks with Emmanuel Macron in Nice. During his two-day visit, Modi is scheduled to meet Slovak President Peter Pellegrini and Prime Minister Robert Fico.
The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening economic cooperation, expanding trade, boosting manufacturing partnerships and enhancing railway development projects. The Prime Minister will also interact with leading Slovak business executives to explore investment opportunities and encourage stronger commercial ties between the two countries.
Next Stop: G7 Summit in France
The visit follows Indian President Droupadi Murmu's state visit to Slovakia in 2025 and reflects growing engagement between the two nations. After completing his engagements in Bratislava, Modi will return to France to participate in the G7 Summit in Evian. The historic visit is being seen as an important step in deepening India-Slovakia relations while expanding cooperation in trade, investment, infrastructure and strategic partnerships.
