FIFA World Cup 2026: Switzerland Strengthen Knockout Push With Commanding 4-1 Victory Over Bosnia-Herzegovina
Switzerland scored four late goals, including a brace from substitute Johan Manzambi, to defeat Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-1 and take firm control of their World Cup group.

Switzerland produced a devastating late surge to defeat Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-1 at a packed SoFi Stadium in the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Thursday, moving into a commanding position in their group and taking a major step toward the knockout stage.

For much of the match, Bosnia-Herzegovina frustrated the Swiss with a disciplined defensive display and tremendous support from their fans. However, a tactical substitution changed the course of the contest as Switzerland scored four times in the closing stages to turn a tight battle into a convincing victory.

Bosnia's Passionate Support Creates Difficult Night for Swiss

The match attracted a crowd of 70,026 spectators, with thousands of Bosnia-Herzegovina supporters creating a lively atmosphere throughout the evening.

Switzerland entered the contest under pressure after being held to a 1-1 draw by Qatar in their opening match. The Swiss controlled possession for long periods and dictated the tempo, but they struggled to find a way through Bosnia's organized defence.

Bosnia-Herzegovina arrived in strong form, carrying a nine-match unbeaten run into the tournament. They showed confidence and determination against a higher-ranked opponent, making life difficult for the Swiss attack.

Despite Switzerland's dominance on the ball, clear scoring opportunities remained limited as Bosnia continued to hold firm.

Manzambi Changes the Match

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 74th minute and came from an inspired tactical decision. Only three minutes after coming off the bench to replace winger Dan Ndoye, 20-year-old Johan Manzambi produced a moment of brilliance.

The young Freiburg midfielder reacted quickly after Amar Memic's headed clearance fell into his path. Launching himself into the air, Manzambi struck a spectacular volley that flew into the net and sent Swiss supporters into celebration. The goal completely shifted momentum in Switzerland's favour and left Bosnia facing an uphill battle.

Red Card Proves Costly for Bosnia

Bosnia's situation worsened shortly after conceding the opening goal. Defender Tarik Muharemovic received a straight red card for a reckless challenge, reducing his side to 10 men at a crucial stage of the match.

The dismissal severely weakened Bosnia's resistance. After competing strongly for more than 70 minutes, they suddenly found themselves struggling to cope with Switzerland's attacking pressure. The Swiss quickly took advantage of the extra space and began creating chances with greater frequency.

Switzerland Turn Dominance Into Goals

With Bosnia stretched and short-handed, Switzerland pressed forward relentlessly. Their second goal arrived in the 84th minute when Rubén Vargas finished sharply to double the lead and give the Swiss breathing room.

The result was effectively secured six minutes later. Vargas turned provider with an excellent pass that found Manzambi inside the penalty area. The substitute calmly finished to score his second goal of the night and make it 3-0. What had been a closely contested match suddenly became a one-sided affair as Switzerland's attack clicked into top gear.

Bosnia Find Consolation

Despite the difficult circumstances, Bosnia-Herzegovina continued fighting until the end. Their efforts were rewarded in the 94th minute when Ermin Mahmic scored a consolation goal, giving the travelling supporters something to celebrate after backing their team throughout the night.

The goal reflected Bosnia's determination and ensured they did not leave empty-handed on the scoreboard.

Xhaka Has the Final Word

Switzerland still had one more goal left in them. Deep into stoppage time, captain Granit Xhaka stepped up to take a penalty and calmly converted from the spot.

The goal completed a comprehensive 4-1 victory and capped off a remarkable late performance from the Swiss side.

Knockout Hopes Remain Alive for Bosnia

Although the final scoreline appeared heavily one-sided, Bosnia-Herzegovina's display was more competitive than the result suggests. For much of the match, they matched Switzerland's intensity and remained firmly in contention. However, Manzambi's stunning opener and Muharemovic's red card changed the direction of the contest.

Bosnia still have a realistic chance of reaching the knockout stage in only their second World Cup appearance. To keep that dream alive, they must defeat Qatar in their final group match.

For Switzerland, the victory could be a turning point. After a disappointing start against Qatar, the team's explosive finish demonstrated their attacking quality and suggested they are finding their best form at exactly the right time.
